Thanks for the pics. It made me wonder what affect the Walmart will have on the emporium and annex. Historically, it's never been for the good. And as much as everyone complains about Food Lion I would hate to loose the convenience of running in for that forgottening item.

I don't think Cleveland Emporium has anything to worry about as long as they keep up the quality of their meats, etc. Heck, I drive all the way over there just for the meat and I am near Archer Lodge. I pass at least 3 grocery stores on my way and the Walmart is nearby. The quality is what will keep them going, I RARELY eat meat from Walmart.

The old Cleveland High School is directly across from the now Annex, it was the only high school around except for Clayton High until South Johnston High was built. If you are coming up 1010 from Smithfield going toward Garner this is the view you will see. If it says "Cleveland High" you can best believe it isn't/wasn't located in downtown "Clayton"

I read in the TIME magazine? that the reason Walmart can keep their meat prices down is because the are plumped up with water and preservatives so you are getting less meat..... 1 lb from DR wells is 1 lb. of meat,,,, l lb from walmart might be only 70% meat and 30% water. So I'd rather eat meat from dr wells or food lion, I never buy meat at walmart..

Can I get an Amen?!

My Mom went to the old Clayton school thru 12 th grade, but when I went it was Clayton Elementary. The principal was Mr. Granthem (sp?) Any one remember him? I remember he was handy with a paddle. And West Clayton was Clayton Primary. I remember when they auctioned off the old stuff from the school. I wanted to go but didn't. :-(

Now... where'd I leave my cane and teeth .... :p

Ok - now this goes back many years. I attended Cleveland when it was Cleveland High School and well everybody 1st-12th rode the same bus. Then when SJHS was built Cleveland then housed 1st - 8th - everyone 9-12 started going to SJHS. But our Principal was Mr. E.T. Benton - He was a great community leader as well as a Principal. When he retired a great math teacher (taught 7 & 8th grade) Mr. Sanders took over - I did not attend Cleveland during this time (moved up to SJHS) and fell out of the loop. But he was a super teacher and Principal from what I heard. Not sure of ones that followed after the retirement of Mr. Sanders. Good memories of the old place - I do want to visit and see all the renovations that have gone on.........it would be nice to visit my 1st grade class again..........

Oops, sorry you were asking about Clayton Principals - got my mind on Cleveland - only familiar with Mr. Bruce Bunn and the retired Dr. Peggy Smith (awesome folks both have been my boss)

Go ahead and put me in the grave. Best I remember, George Hodges was the Principal when I attended Clayton Elementary ('60-'67) Ours was the last 7th grade class on that campus, moved down the street to the "Big House" CHS that year. 8) 8)

Just think all the people living in JoCo in 2057 will be looking back at pics of Walmart way back in 2008!

Moved to Clayton when I was in the 6th grade. Moved from the big city of Garner. When I moved to Clayton there was the primary school k-3 (located on 42 across from the trailer park), Clayton Elementary 4-5 (now the commerce center) Cooper Middle school 6-8 (located over near what used to the projects in Clayton), and the High School.

You had Cleveland Elementary (pictured in the first post), and once you left there it depended on which side of 1010 you lived on as to whether or not you went to CHS, or SJ.

And ask yourself what else they've injected into it that it has a "use by" date that is 2-3 weeks out on ground hamburg... ewwwww!

I DO NOT buy Walmart brand meats at Walmart, especially after I heard that they inject it with (i forget what) something to keep it fresh/pink longer.

I will buy stuff that is stocked by other reputable vendors like Smithfields, Tyson, Perdue...but not their own brand ... heck no!!!

DR Well's store looked about like that pic till the ??early 1970's?? when they built over the store and enlarged it.

I remember driving over one night w/ Daddy to see where a Car had wrecked on the curve & plowed into the power pole & store.

Mr Benton was a super Principal. He directed traffic on 1010 2x a day in all kinds of weather. He moved the buses in and out. No problems. Then again there were maybe 2-3 classes per grade at CES and very few car pool families.

I can see that faded light blue Pepsi Mach. out front now... and the large German Shepherd that was usually on the mat by the door.

Our German's would act all mean & bad  when we drove to the store and then be 'asleep' when we opened the truck door.
Shhhh, don't tell them it was me! :-(
