On his way to NC State! WJHS Student Earns Park Scholarship

    WJHS Student Wins Coveted Park Scholarship

    BENSON-- Joshua Maust, a Senior at West Johnston High School, has been
    notified that he has earned the prestigious Park Scholarship-- valued at
    $55,000 in-state and $103,000 out-of-state. He was chosen from among
    101 finalists who are all top-ranked students from North Carolina and
    other states.

    Maust has a 4.9 weighted GPA and is involved in cross country and
    tennis, the marching band, Boy Scouts, and yearly volunteer Mission
    projects. He is also a member of the National Junior Honor Society. He
    has won 14 subject awards in physical science, health and p.e., Biology,
    Spanish, ELPS, Algebra II, Environmental Science, Advanced Math, US
    History, Spanish III, AP statistics, AP Chemistry, and AP Language.

    The Parks Scholarships program is one of America's most prestigious
    undergraduate merit scholarship programs. The scholarships pay expenses
    for four years of study at North Carolina State, and include a stipend
    for each student to purchase a personal computer system. In addition,
    there are unique program components focusing on leadership development
    and community service. Selection criteria for the merit-based Park
    Scholarships include academic achievement; personal characteristics such
    as character, integrity and motivation; exceptional leadership
    potential; and commitment to the betterment of one's community. The
    scholarships are renewable each. based on each student's academic
    achievement and personal conduct. The scholarships are named in honor of the late Roy H. Park, a distinguished alumnus of NC State and president
    of the media company Park Communications Inc., a conglomerate of
    newspaper, television and radio stations that, at one point, reached
    one-third of all American homes. Park passed away in 1993.
