I've worked salaried, W2, and 1099 and this tool is great to calculator equivalent bill rates across the three. It can be tough to do this on your own.

    thanks

Thanks for this timely information. I am in the process of negotiating for temporary 1099 work and I've struggled to find a reliable conversion factor. I found a few recommendation to add 30% to the W2 wage for 1099. I used that factor and may have chased the employer away. Then again, for $20/hr at 1099 I'm not too concerned that I asked for more.

I would be interested in hearing more about your 1099 experience. Did you have to hire an Accountant, Banker, or Lawyer to make it work. Would you recommend 1099 employment?

Also, the more I learn about 1099, the more it looks like employers are blurring the lines between employee and contractor. I don't care if they do, but I don't want to be part of any trouble with the IRS.

Wow this showed up in Google search results looking for a better rate calculator. Worked 1099 again this year, so was doing some research.

Anyway...if anybody wants an Excel version, I tried to copy the one from the website, so that you can compare as many jobs as you want, seeing gross, net, and effective compensation.
