What would you guys do in this situation? I have a possible job opportunity that would require me to work until 10pm...problem comes in that my husband works until 6pm, and my son gets off the bus at 3:30 he is 11 years old, but has some developmental problems so he panics when he comes home alone... I have two choices, not take the job that I really need right now, or find after school care for a middle schooler... Are there even programs for kids his age? If so, where? I looked at maybe Kid's Clubhouse, but they look like they are 55 a week!? and not sure if they even take kids his age... Help?
If you need the job, I would definitely take it. If your kid is going to suffer, well of course, that's a no brainer. I know there are solutions for childcare out there for kids his age, might take some work to find something affordable. The YMCA offers after school care for this age and they also offer financial assistance too.
I want desperatly to stay home with him, but we need the income right now. What I am hoping is that I can find a job that I do not have to work at night, so I can be home with him in the evenings... so far no luck... I am a mechanic, have been for many years, but I struggle with finding a male shop owner that will hire a woman...I have fought this for many years now... so needless to say finding work in my field with all the guys lined up for work right now is really tough... Checked out the YMCA, the only one I can find is for Riverwood...don't they come around Cleveland and McGee's? I really hope the job market turns around soon...
nope I just looked online, I will try calling the number... I wonder if I could find a "sitter" or something if it comes to that... I am trying to explore all my options at the moment, I will not hear about whether or not I got the other job until the end of the week... I am really hoping for something that doesn't have me work until 11pm or worse, but at this point a job is a job... beggars can't be choosers right?
Is there a neighbor's house he could go to and you could possibly pay them a small amount (less than a daycare) to let him hang at their house for 2.5 hours until your husband gets home?
possibly...I cant believe I did not think of that...my neighbor's kids are in high school, so I can ask.... usually no one is allowed to play until their parents get home, but it is certainly a thought...maybe I could pay the 16 year old just to keep an eye on him, make sure he does his homework kinda stuff....hmmmm Thanks VolleyGirl!! (I feel like a dufus...lol)
Could you find a high school age student who could stay with him? Perhaps a guy who could kind of mentor him, help him with homework, etc...
i have an 11 y/o and he does after school at the school. it is run by the school so they make sure the homework is done first and provide tutoring if needed. it's extremely well priced.
What happened to the old days, I had a key to the house by 3rd-4th grade, and just let myself in, called mom at work to let her know I was home.
I don't see an afterschool program at McGee's...I guess they figure most kids can take care of themselves at that point. I am looking into having a neighbor watch him after school for a couple of hours... When I was barely in Jr High, I would walk a mile and a half to my house, go inside, and call my parents to let them know I was home....these days you get grabbed at the bus stop, or flashed... I tried having my son call me when he got in, he was able to do that just fine...but panicked a short while later...it is kind of like sensory overload for him, I know it sounds strange, but we are working at leaving him for longer periods of time so he can adjust...
Question Did you say in an earlier post your a mechanic? If so-I just started a job this week at a shop, and we need techs bad. And some of them are scheduled 8am to 4,or 11 am to 8 pm,etc etc. In other words-offset times. Give me more info about your tech abilities (of course feel free to Pm me-it does'nt have to be on the forum) one of my previous techs is a woman-and she was the best I've had (at that time only certified Viper tech in area!)And good luck with your son!! Bob
I don't know anything about their program since I haven't used it in 5 years, but I saw a sign for Interskate - they are charging 40.00 a week.
