Why do parents send children to school with a fever or when they have already thrown up at home that morning? Do not send your sick child to school with the instructions to "call me if you're not feeling better later." (They will tell their teacher "I was sick this morning but Mom said to just call her later if my fever didn't go away or I threw up again.) You have now infected the entire class. Those children will, in turn, possibly infect their siblings (and parents!), who then can infect their class...THINK ABOUT IT! How would you feel towards a coworker who continually came to work sick and you, in turn, became ill and then your entire family became ill? Keep your child home until the fever has been gone for 24 hours. Keep them home until they have not thrown up for 24 hours.

  2. Didn't we have a thread like this recently? I remember going off about this topic not long ago.

Maybe their child has already missed the allot days and does not want their child to fail the quarter?!?!? No saying that makes it right but the way the schools pound on parents for making a judgement call to keep them home ... I can see why some parents would just send them to so they can be marked present.

  4. Still wrong. I don't care if my daughter had to miss 20 days. If she's sick, she's sick. She would still put other kids at risk by sending her to school.

Along the same lines...why do people bring their children to the emergency room..as visitors. I had an 8 wk old last night. The mother was having a problem..dad, older brother..3yr and grandma were along for the ride. I'm quite sure grandma could have stayed home with the kids as she was the one taking care of them in the ER.

Do people not realize that the worst place for germs..is the hospital? And the ER is probably the worst?

I'll get off my soapbox now..

And I know A LOT of people, myself included, have the threat of termination lurking if you use all your sick days before the end of the year. So while I'd like to be out of the office every time I don't feel good I can't be.

This is one of the things that ticks me off to no end!!!-- parents sending their kids to school sick. I had one home today sick. She won't be going tomorrow either. I don't care about the policy & btw people, if it is valid, they don't care. I had one have his appendix out a few years ago & missed quite a bit. No, he didn't fail. Just keep them home. Make arrangements. Yes, you can do it at ANY job. I've had quite a few. I NEVER let my employees stay if they so much as coughed. Why? B/c it was a reastaurant & I'm sure you wouldn't want your food prepared by a sick person. I also worked as an office manager for a florist shop. And in retail. And at a high end brokerage firm downtown as a secretary. You know what? in ALL the jobs, I never got fired b/c I kept my sick kids at home or myself at home. Not once was I spoken to about it. It's just common sense. Stupid WJHS has been the WORST by far w/ sick kids going to school. My daughter tells me all the time of sick kids at school that went to the bathroom to throw up b/c their mom told them she can't come get them. Or how about the one that was out w/ swine flu, decided to come back & was hauled off in the wheelchair b/c she passed out. Told everyone it was the medicine that makes her dizzy & such. Umm ...stay home!!! I have some children w/ very compromised immune systems. One has holes in her heart, two have severe asthma. I can NOT get the flu shots as severe allergic reactions to the eggs. By sending your sick kids to school, you are not teaching them anything. REally, they're not being productive, infecting the whole class and teachers & their families. WJHS I'm told has many, many teachers out. I was told by another teacher that they may shut down meadows schools for a few days due to high # of absences. Don't know the truth to that as just hersay from another teacher in JCPS. My daughter has sat by several in class who were throwing up at WJHS. She is now home sick. Go figure. Okay, off my soapbox. Don't send kids to school sick please.

my friend got fired in the middle of treatment for cancer because she used up all her PTO and FMLA so it does happen where I work. they didn't care about her having cancer, they sure as heck don't care if I have the flu. I'm just saying that there are places where this is a reality. Trust me, if I could, I would stay home every time I don't feel good. I think adults can be more responsible about hand washing, etc. in a effort not to get other sick than kids do agree that every effort needs to be made to keep a sick child home from school. Even if it means using your PTO time off when they are sick.

I've always disliked the "Perfect Attendance Award" for this very reason. I think it should be called the "Came to School every day I Wasn't Sick" Award.

I think the workplace differs from schools.... if kids sick leave them home...

if you must work and many do have to then take extra precaution to avoid close contact with co-workers... I certainly won't judge or condemn someone for having to work to keep things in order if they are sick.... announce it and you'll have no friends that day... :jester:

I keep my kids home when they're sick, but I blame the school every bit as much as I blame the kids on this one. The schools perpetuate this type of behavior. There are perfect attendance awards, punishments for missing even a reasonable number of days, and for the high school seniors, they get to get to skip their finals if they have excellent attendance. Obviously the schools want the kids there whether they are sick or not. And the parents' word should be good enough for the school. Parents shouldn't have to drag their kids to the doctor's office for regular illnesses, such as flu virus', stomach bugs, etc. Obviously if the child is missing days excessively or has missed more than 2 or 3 days in a row, a doctor's note would be necessary, but otherwise I think the school should accept a written note from the parent saying that the child was ill.

It didn't work that way for me!! I had a bad cold, and I had a private office, I stayed in it by myself and put a quarantine sign up, everyone kept opening the door anyhow and asking me what was wrong...

hey if you've got extra time to spare pass it my way because between staying home every time my kid is sick and then staying home every time I am sick I will be on the black list of folks who have used all of theirs up and face disciplinary action. it's not like I want to get my coworkers sick and I sure as crap don't want to be at work when I don't feel good, but the same sort of pressure that they start putting on the kids at school to be there seems to carry over into the workplace and the bottom line is the business and not the welfare.

p.s. I am staying home from work sick today. seriously.
