ok, so we need to GET AWAY and were thinking about going to the Outer Banks for a weekend. Anyone have any personal favs as to which town in the Outer Banks or a certain place they stayed. As always, thank you for your opinions and recommendations....
I have two different thoughts on our vacation to the Outer Banks, and not sure what your price range is but... The first one: To me, pretty much the whole coast of NC looks the same--typical beach towns-- except the towns of Duck and Corolla. I loved Duck, because on vacation with kids it was picturesque, with lots of little shops, ice-cream stores, and restaurants to eat at, kayak/boat rental places, and paved trails next to the road to bike or walk with kids (as opposed to on the road, which is nice if you have younger kids). It was very vacation friendly, and landscaped and beautiful. There is a very nice park with a lighthouse to see http://www.currituckbeachlight.com/history.php . Corolla was neat because you could drive out onto the beach, and go on the off road jeep tours to see the wild horses http://wildhorsetour.com/. If you are renting a beach house for a week, I would recommend Duck. Second thought: If you are just heading out for a few days, and looking for a hotel, we enjoyed the Hilton Garden Inn at Kitty Hawk. http://hiltongardeninnouterbanks.com/ (I love the beach sound on their website :lol It was in a convenient area for restaurants and anything you might need grocery or shopping wise, has its own beach access as well as swimming pools indoor and out, has rocking chairs, its own dock/pier to fish off of, and a hotel restaurant with a very nice buffet breakfast so everyone can get a full stomach to start the day with. You can also literally walk right across the road to a barbeque restaurant and ice-cream shop. It is also a very drivable distance to Jockey's Ridge State Park http://www.jockeysridgestatepark.com/ , where the kids can have fun sliding down the giant sand dunes (might want to bring a disc sled) or flying kites (and makes neat pictures for memories), or you can take hang gliding lessons, and it is of course close to the Wright Bros Memorial park http://www.nps.gov/wrbr/index.htm . If you are going to go to any other National Parks in the coming year you might consider buying a year long pass instead of just entry into the one site. And we always get a good laugh over this restaurant http://www.dirtydickscrabs.com/ordereze/Content/7/Summary.aspx They have a Nags head location :lol: And...If you plan on taking any of the ferry routes home, like if you head out Rodanthe way to try to see the house in the movie which we could never find, make sure you make reservations, otherwise you could get stuck out on one of the islands overnight with no place to stay, which we almost did...
I agree... Duck and Corolla are absolutely beautiful and equipped with everything you will ever need to have fun. The Rodanthe house has moved from the ocean side to the sound side of the road. That might be why you couldn't find it!! It looks different being on the other side of the road!!
Thanks for the info on the Rodanthe house...I would love to go back out there to vacation again and try to find it again! Will keep this in mind.
