Dont get excited, right of way is scheduled to be obtained by 2014, assuming 2-3 years of construction youre looking at a 2017 completion, but at least its in the works.
The name for the new high school should have been the Cleveland Yankees, youd still have dirt roads in this area if not for the northern invasion.
Funny you dont seem to know the history of your own state. NC got the name "good road state" because of the amount of roads that were built connecting the numerous counties. These were secondary roads which not only dont support the traffic needs but cost money to maintain. Its not the "good road state", its the we have too many lane miles to maintain state. Like I said before, I know more yanks than rednecks in this area, you are the minority and more and more of you leave everyday, scared of progress.
I have to agree we have the second largest road system second only to Texas. I cannot understand why the need was seen for this many roads. Problems is, as you pointed out, we now have to pay to maintain them and those expensive Bridges and drainage infrastructure to support them.
They dont seem like they know anything about planning around here. Just look at NC42 on both sides of I-40. It has to be the most unorganized commercial area Ive ever seen.
I guess I don't understand the point you are trying to make, are you saying other states didn't have secondary roads? Again we are 2nd in roads only to Texas.
North Carolina wasn't the only state with roads before the Interstate System was put in, nor the largest, the hilliest or the most rural.
Looking at the DOTs 5 year TIP plan, it looks like they will do 42/40 interchange improvements, likely making it a single point urban interchange which is a lot more efficient. Also widening 42 from 50 heading east.
Ditto, I love those large red flowered thingies on the Median on the way to the Airport also (I realize those aren't wild flowers). Actually my favorite is the cedar bush just west of exit 317 that looks like it is giving the classic middle fingered salute. Last year I saw a truck had an issue and almost took it out. Brought a tear to my eye!
I asked someone with the DOT how much they spend on "beautification" of the road system, I'll keep it to myself, I dont want to ruin it for you.
It's my understanding the roadside wildflower program is paid for out of personalized license plate fees.
I remember, during the years I lived in Selma and worked in Rocky Mount, sputtering at my car radio as the governor (yes he was a D) bragged about paving every mile of dirt road in the state, while I got to choose whether to drive pothole-strewn I-95 or broken down, mostly 2 lane, 301. I thought then that the priorities were not exactly in the right place.
