I've heard that people can purchase vaccines on their own to give animals..is this true and which ones are available and where?

You cannot purchase your own rabies shot, those have to be done by a professional. I also, personally, disagree with doing your own vaccines since you don't know 100% if your pet is healthy enough for vaccines. Go to a vet and have them do it, some will even do payment plans if you're worried about money.

Some of the clinics that are held also offer all of the vaccines, not just the rabies, at a really affordable price, prob around $5 each. They will also often offer heartworm and feline leukemia testing on site, as well as microchipping, usually around $10. At the prices and convenience
they offer, if you can't afford to do it there, you probably shouldn't own a pet.

Agreed. Owning a pet isn't cheap. If you're overwhelmed by the cost of owning a pet (vaccines every year, flea/tick prevention every month, heart worm prevention every month, food, etc) just don't get one. I have 2 large dogs and they cost us about $75 a month for just food and preventatives alone.

We do all vaccines that are available @ Agri or Tractor Supply ourselves.

If my pet was sickly acting, I'd be taking it to the vet for that reason. Which any vet wouldn't (update) do vaccinations on a sick pet either/anyway. Of course giving vaccination to your pet is for most part to save money. I'm pretty sure most people would "investigate" on what to do & how to do it prior to jeopardizing their pet's well being. After all, saving a vet bill is the reason its done so wouldn't want to do it wrong & end up at a vet with more of an expense. An owner giving a pet the vaccs (correctly placed, etc) is no different for pet then having vet give it.

The distemper shot that is usually yearly is now available in a dose done every 3yrs instead (don't know if the stores sell this one though but vets offer it) which if that gets "lined up" with rabies vaccinataion then the pet wouldn't need annual vaccinations anyhow - would only need every 3yrs if healthy normal pet.

I'd self vaccinate my pets if I found it beneficial -- and if I wasn't so quesy at the needle. At least they'd be getting vaccinated.

I'm sure people do have a pet because they can afford it .. but also things can happen that the finances or life situations cause "no more can afford as much for pet" ... If that was the case for me, I'd lower the food quality if need be, take away the toys, put certain vetting choices on the bottom of the list but I'd STILL keep my pet since its a family member. Not run it to a shelter or place it in a FREE PET ad to just give to anyone who may really be no better qualified at pet parenting then I am on the financial aspect of the situation. As long as my pet is happy with its life and living the best that I can provide for it at that season of our family life, then all is well. At least I know my pet is safe.

PEOPLE : Please don't forget to spay or neuter your pets. That should be the first part of pet ownership expense :p

My dog has has thousands in vet bills over the past few years. :? It's a good thing I love her. I've had several people suggest putting her down. I can't say that 10 years ago I would have been able to spend the money I have on her. Feeding your kids comes first. Period.

We were giving her daily injections for a while, which DH did because I was too squeamish to do it. However, if he had not been available, I would have learned how. It's really not rocket science.
