Ok, maybe I should have posted this on the cat/dog forum but this raccoon is not my pet! We did have 21 chickens and now are down to 4. We have tried everything to deter this stupid raccoon. He or she, is at the point now that they are tearing holes in the chicken wire to get in the coop. I didn't realize they were so strong. Anyway, where can I get one of those have a heart traps? I really need to get one ASAP. I saw where I could order it off the web for $90 but I need it sooner than that. (Also don't want to pay $90 since we only have 4 chickens left). Any ideas??

What about JoCo animal control? Would they not loan you a trap and pick it up after you catch him? Or do they just deal with domestic animals?

Yes, they are. Everytime we find out where they come in, they make another place. This time he has gone too far....I don't know how he made a hole in that chicken wire but he did!!

Thanks everybody for your help! ljk I pm'd you! We're sure it's a raccoon. We put up a wildlife camera and saw him. I've been reading chicken forums (yeah, I live a pitiful life) and from the way the chickens have been left, we know it's a raccoon.

nsane, lol, yeah he's setting them free alright. Right up to chicken heaven....he leaves them in the pen because he can't always get them out if his hole is too small.

Raccoons DO eat chickens!!! My dad has chickens and several vanished. My dad waited out there one night to see what was taking his chickens. Then he seen the raccoon crawl into his chicken coop......he won't be in there anymore if you know what I mean.....

Girl, we have tried!! My husband used to trap, years ago, for some of the farmers in the area each winter. He always used those steel traps. But the stupid raccoon will not go near these....maybe he's not stupid after all. So I thought maybe if I tried one of the have a heart traps and bait it with marshmellows (which one of our customers told us raccoons love) we could catch him. Just waiting on ljk to let me know when is a good time to go pick it up. I'm ready to see the end of him. You just can't imagine how discouraging it is to go down there almost every morning and see another hen dead. We've started locking them up in the hen house each night and going down there about 5:30 in the morning to let them out. That worked last night. The funny thing is, the coop is completely covered from top to bottom. He just gnaws (or whatever) a place in the chicken wire and comes on into the coop!
