I got a post card in the mail today from the "Regional NRIA Residential Improvement Project" saying that they were willing to do stuff like install siding, replace windows and doors, and gutter replacement all for free. I have seen real offers like this in the past and even had a house we were living in in California re-insulated several (many) years ago under a similar program (or so it seems). It, too, sounded like a scam, but it was indeed real. It was a government program. They did the work and the government paid them to do it. Posting on 4042 is my first "Real or Scam" question about this, as I figure it's a local thing that y'all might know something about. TIA
Spent some time Googling these mailings and it looks like the general consensus is that it falls more into the category of false advertising than scam. The false advertising part is that the work isn't going to be done for free and they are not associated with any government (federal, state or local). It looks like they'll come out and give you an estimate for having the work done, and probably offer to set you up with financing.
