No wonder we have a childhood obesity problem! How can we expect kids to get enough exercise if they can't play a game because they might get a boo-boo!
Tether ball was the best. I remember getting whacked so hard in the head once with it. It hurt like "heck" but man it was fun...lol.
That is just plain stupid. Just like requiring a kid to wear a helmet when riding a bike. I think we all faired pretty well without them.
Now....let's re-read this, shall we? Where did I say "banning" the use of them? Hmmmmm...........let's see........NOPE! Not there! My line of thinking, as you put it, is more towards the the choice to do so. For instance, if you want to ride your motorcycle without a helmet, it shoud be your choice. Now, your choice to not protect your melon on a motor vehicle that can reach excessive speeds, to me, is stupid. That is common sense (ur uncommon in most cases), Ken. A law requiring it, to me, is just telling the general public that they are too stuipd to do it themselves. Now...back to bicycles..........if my kid wants to ride in the X-Games...sure..wear the protective gear that is there to wear. If they are just riding around the yard and on the driveway.....c'mon. I imagine that you jumped your share of home made ramps when you were a kid and helmets were not even thought of for bicycles. Last time I saw you, you didn't look too disfigured from it.
You guys are missing the point of the article. Sure recess has been banned but did you read why? Because in the society in which we live now, and everything is everyone else fault, if some kid fell down and broke an arm, you can bet your next paycheck that some parents would sue the school and school system because there was no way that their little Johnny would have broken his arm had he been properly supervised. Sure it sucks but the school is protecting itself from lawsuits...and you all know it would happen.
Play the odds if you wish, but anecdotal information is not the best on which to base life and death decisions ..... http://www.bhsi.org/stats.htm About 540,000 bicyclists visit emergency rooms with injuries every year. Of those, about 67,000 have head injuries, and 27,000 have injuries serious enough to be hospitalized. 1 in 8 of the cyclists with reported injuries has a brain injury. A very high percentage of cyclists' brain injuries can be prevented by a helmet, estimated at anywhere from 45 to 88 per cent.
It will soon become a legal risk to move. Trial lawyers are the problem. Are they moslty liberal Democrats or conservative Republicans?
Actually, it sounds more like a valid reason to ban bicycles altogather. Less people were harmed by breast implants and we had no trouble banning them. Actually it may not be as bad as all that. 540,000 does sound like a lot, but (according to the link you provide) there are 85,000,000 bicycle riders. Presuming that the 540,000 emergency were all from different people (ie, no one went to the emergency room twice for bicycle related injuries), then that means that the injury rate is just a little more than sis-tenths of one percent. The flu is more dangerous (More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and about 36,000 die). Maybe we should make wearing gloves and surgical masks required by law.
I will admit I may not always agree with Josey but I do agree with this one. There are too many frivilous cases. I can't believe what some people will sue over. I remember PE was everyday and now it is only once a week? Of course there is "recess" but now they are complaining about what games they should play? Then of course, we can start complaining about how the kids are getting fatter and eating less. It is all absurd. Kids should play, kids get hurt. Instead of axing the whole game maybe they should start with "permission slips". Let's just give them all a trophy for "thinking" about playing a game.
At that particular school banning all of the "chasing" activities. I don't agree, heck one can be walking and trip and fall. Is there more to this that I didn't see? A child could be in the lunch room, trip, fall, hit the corner of a table. So do we ban ALL of their activities and wrap them in charmin? I didn't read all of the article but what sports and activities are the children allowed to do? :?
Ken, you are a rennaisance man for sure...How in heaven's name did you get so worldly by such a young age? I think you're a Da Vinci in our generation. ps. happy belated birthday H6
My son's teacher told him this week that she was going to ban any footballs at recess because she has to fill out too many accident reports!
