Do I need to register my dog? Where do I go to do that and what is the fee? He has a rabies tag but it is from another state. How do I go about this? Thanks Terri
You don't have to register him... I think. Zoo?! ... Zoo would know... But you do have to pay property taxes on him. Every year. Welcome to NC  The line the (some) politicians pockets as hard and as fast as you can state.
There is no formal licensing of dogs in Johnston County, NC at this time. Your out of state rabies tag will be recognized by animal control (if you have paper certificate from your vet - you can get one mailed or faxed from your old vet - or probably have it with his health records from your previous vet) you only need this if your dog is picked up by animal control for running loose. As far as property tax, they ask you when you file for taxes how many dogs you have -you get this once a year - but from what I remember it is only something minor like 2.00 per dog if that. . .they don't ask anything other than how many dogs you have. IF they ever get around to licensing, as some other jurisdictions do, it will help stop animal overpopulation, as people want to save the extra costs of licensing an un-neutered pet, which are generally an additional 15.00 - 50.00 per year, depending on where you live. Welcome to NC.
I did some checking, it's been awhile since I really paid attention to our tax listing form - anyway - there is NO tax on dogs here - but it's likely that they were asking (still might be) for animal population numbers - regarding the size and yearly costs of shelter operations, as well as thinking ahead, in case the county decides to require licensing, like Cumberland and many other counties, they will have a guide to go by. There is a good reason to be 100% truthful, if asked on a form. Some towns LIMIT the number of dogs you can have depending on the size of your property - Garner is one of them. I believe Cary as well - anyway - IF it ever comes down to it, it is likely that you might be able to be 'grandfathered' in - if you tell the truth and you have more than what is 'allowed'.' Out here - it's pretty much country still, but the way things are building up, who knows how long that will last.
