Hi, I thought this might be interesting - this month is the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death. Graceland is having all kinds of event going on and TVLand/Turner Classic Movie channels are showing all Elvis' movies this month. Why don't we share our memories of Elvis here? Have you met or saw him? Where were you when you first heard about Elvis' death? Did you ever go to Graceland? Tell us your story. I'll start with mine: I was 10 years old, playing with my dolls on my living room's floor. My mom was cooking our dinner in the kitchen. I was watching "The Brady Bunch" and all of sudden, there was an immediate interruption on TV and it was a Special News announcing Elvis Presley's unexpected death. My mom came out of the kitchen and screamed "What??? I can't believe it! Elvis Presley is dead!!" She was crying while I was on the floor who doesn't understand what was going on. Our phone was ringing off the hook like crazy, knowing that most of our relatives love Elvis, especially my Aunt, who was voted as "She-Elvis" during her high school senior year. I did not became Elvis Presley's fan until I reached in my 30's (yeah, late!) thanks to my son who loves his music. The more he played his songs, the more I got hooked with his songs. Movie: Viva Las Vegas because of the songs and the love attraction between Ann Margret and Elvis. Song: Jailhouse Rock Graceland: We are planning to go there next year.
I love Elvis, although I was a year old when he died. My three pet's names are: Elvis Aaron, Lisa-Marie, and Jessie Garon (we call him Garon - thats Elvis' twin who died at birth). We are definitely planning a trip to Graceland. I wanna stay at the Heartbreak Hotel. I have a piece of the original black lace curtains that were in Circle G ranch! My sister (as a teen) went to Elvis' hotel when he was in Fayetteville. He was throwing the towels and washclothes off of his balcony and she caught one. The day before, she ran into his limo (literally crashed into it with her car) in a parking lot. His bodyguards were very nice and no cops were involved!
My mom is an Elvis fanatic - she has seen him in concert more times than i can count and has been at Graceland just as many. When my oldest son was little (under 5yo) with his black hair and brown eyes, she had him standing on the table impersonating Elvis:lol: She totally freaked when she found out the name of the street i live on (you guys that know me know what i mean).
I have always been an Elvis fan. I was about 15 when he died. I think I was out and when I got home I heard about it on the tv. My mom and I always watched all the Elvis movies together. I still have some old magazines from where he died and I think some newspaper clipping from it. I know I was a bit devistated. I have been to Graceland several times. Believe me, it is nothing like what you expect it to be. You would think it would be some gawdy thing, but in reality it isn't. Have also seen his 2 planes, the Lisa Maria and Hound Dog (which is a smaller Jet) and have also seen his bus. The first time I went, I even got to sit in the jeep he used in Blue Hawaii. The costumes he wore are amazing! And the jewelry!!!!!!!!! That was something else! A piece of advice, if you plan on staying at the Heartbreak Hotel, be sure to book it early and I do mean EARLY!!! They book up fast and they are a bit expensive. The last time we went, we stayed at a hotel about a block away from Graceland. It was a lot cheaper then Heartbreak Hotel was. Definitly go if you get the chance. Now I did hear that there was talk of some remodeling going on, I think it is the plaza and not Graceland itself. Will be interesting/ My son and daughter dressed up as Elvis and Priscilla one year for Halloween before we moved here to KS. We made my son a cape and my husband and I had bought some "Elvis" sunglasses when we were on out Honeymoon in Las Vegas and he has those on and we made him a microphone and even took his little cassette player out trick or treating and he would perform for people when we went to their doors. My daughter had a long black wig on and we got her some fake eyelashes and a feather boa and such and she would "dance" while my son "sang". It was so funny to watch them. Still love Elvis!!!
I am 43. My 1st concert was Elvis in 1973 @ Notre Dame ( I was 9). I was 13 in 1977 and in Estes Park Colorado when I heard he had died. I was in a store downtown, and somewhere still have the Rocky Mountain news with the news on the front page. I still like Elvis, and play the CD's in my car and at work.
Wow, I just visited the Heartbreak Hotel website. I'm impressed and I will keep that in mind when making a rsvp next year. I wonder if the hotel is owned by the Presley?
My Mom and Dad were Elvis fans... I love Lisa Marie's voice .. This vid makes me bawl every time I see it... I believe it was done on the 25th anniv :? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99f8dYWB8X0
I loved Elvis as a kid because we had all his albums and I watched his movies. I knew every word of the Aloha from Hawaii Live album by heart. My mom saw Elvis every time he appeared in Charlotte, including his last concert there which she says she wished she hadn't seen because he was in such bad shape. I was in fifth or sixth grade and was talking to a friend on the phone when I learned he was dead. After chatting for 10 or 15 minutes she said "Isn't it sad about Elvis?" I asked what she was talking about and she said he died. I remember thinking how on earth could she have been talking about other stuff when Elvis just died. It would be like someone calling the day the Twin Towers fell and just chatting about going shopping or something without even mentioning the horrible event. It was huge to me. I saw him in concert once, when I was about six years old. I have never been to Graceland, but would love to go relive that 70's "style." Reading Dean Koontz' Odd Thomas books I got a different perspective on Elvis. If you have not read them, but are an Elvis fan, you might enjoy the character of Elvis' ghost. It is amusing, but touching at the same time.
My Mom was a huge ELVIS fan, so I grew up listening to all of his albums and watching all his movies. I did my 8th grade school report on Elvis, and made and A. My Mom cried like a baby when he died. During these times, I often wonder what he would be/look like now, after all these years. The only gospel music I will listen to, is Elvis singing it. His voice sends shivers down my spine. My favorite Elvis movie is 'Blue Hawaii'. Favorite Elvis song is 'Can't Help Falling in Love'.
Elvis- Amazing Grace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3XdXEJEI4E Elvis - American Trilogy (I love this one from Aloha from Hawaii concert) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdyhoYbH8ac Elvis- I can't help falling in love with you.
