Sadly, we got an email that one of the Boy Scout families in our Council lost their 9 year old daughter due to choking on a craft bead. We do not think of these things happening to a child of her age so please remind your children and grandchildren not to put non-edible things in their mouths. Also, small children like to put balloons in their mouths as well and this is terribly dangerous. I remember hearing of a child who popped a balloon in her mouth, stopped breathing and had permanent brain damage. Pass the word along to all you know and maybe we can spare another family the heartache this family is going through. Thanks, Mommy3
Thanks for the reminder. Many only think of this danger with very young children. I know a 9 year old who is constantly chewing on balloons, rubber braclets, anything she can get in her mouth! Your warning is exactly what I am afraid of with this child! Her parents allow it (but don't allow her to chew her hair, which IMO is a much safer habit) When she visits my home I always "collect" the items she chews on and return them when she leaves for home. Seems that now when she is chewing, and we make eye contact, she just plops it right out with an "oops, I forgot!"
