Anyone have a sure fire cure for when my Jese my beagle goes into his "reverse sneezing" fits? I've tried cupping your hand over her muzzle and applying gentle pressure to her nostrils, or by softly stroking her throat. but that doesn't seam to work. Seams he usually gets an attack of it in the middle of the night when he is curled up on my bed sleeping.

They seam to last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. From things I have read online it doesn't hurt them but I just worry.

    thanks

Have you tried giving her Benedryl at bedtime?

no I have not. Will that help? and also Jese does not do it every night, just every once in a while. And do they make a child's Benedryl?

Funny, I came across an article on reverse sneezing the other day, when I was researching Bailey's sneezing ... don't remember what/where it was or what it said tho.

Benedryl, you usually want to give one mg per pound of body weight for a dog ... I know that much. Children's Benadryl isnt necessary. Jese's what ... about 40 pounds? I think it comes in 25 mg tablets. Pick up the generic brand from target, and a pill splitter ... one and a half pills would do. Doesnt have to be exact, just close.

Yea Jese is about 40 lbs. I'll pick up some generic Benedryl tomorrow at wally world. Since he doesn't do it every night can I give it to him when I wake up from his reverse sneezing? I just feel so bad for the little guy when he does it.

Giving it to him after the fact isnt going to help, unless it happens several times thru-out the night. You have to use it as a preventative ... to head off symptoms before they happen. I'd try it every night for a week and see if it helps any. The benadryl won't hurt him at that dose. Might not even work, but is worth a try as much as anything else. In my ever-so-humble-non-veterinarian-opinion. ;)

Yes, Benedryl is given @ 1mg per pound not to exceed the adult dosage of 2, 3 times per day if needed. It's worth a try since Benedryl is very safe. It nay cause a little drowsiness (with me, I sleep good for about 7-8 hours when I have to take it)!

I realized I had the generic Benedryl at home. I mixed one 25mg of it in his food this evening. See how that does tonight. I know he had a reverse sneezing episode the past two nights.

Past 3-4 nights I have been giving Jese 25mg of generic Benedryl and he hasn't had any issues. Not sure if its doing anything yet. But what do I do when he as one of his reverse sneezing fits during the day?

I never heard of this, so of course I had to google it. What I found says that, even though it looks disturbing, it is not harmful to the dog. They say you might be able to stop it by getting the dog to swallow.

You can give him a Benedryl in the morning as well. When my guy is being horribly bothered by allergies, he takes it first thing in the morning, sometimes afternoon, depending on how he's doing, and at bedtime. This was recommended by my Vet.

That's what I would do. My Vet said 1 mg per pound. I give my 41 lb baby 1.5 when he needs it and sometimes it is morning and night. My guys get to the point where they have "snotbelly". Great, huh? That's what the Vet called it. It's basically when an upchuck happens but there's really nothing there...all allergy-related. Hope this helps. Oh, and btw, you may see your baby get sleepy when you first start treating her (it knocks me out) but that will go away after she has taken it for a bit. I buy the Wal-mart or Target brand. It is $4 for a 100 count...much cheaper!
