Since my job requires me to work on Saturday, I cannot take Saturday off. My plan to take my family out to Boone, NC and spend one night on Sunday. I have checked most motels and campgrounds website to see if they're available.

Yes, they have reservation available on Sunday, but the problem is they required us to stay TWO nights due to Labor Day weekend. I cannot stay on Monday night because I have to go to work on Tuesday.

I think it's unfair for them to force us to make a reservation for 2 nights. There are many working families who have tight schedule. I, myself, cannot take any time off because I'm not a permanent employee yet until after Christmas this year.

Now I feel better after I vent. Whew. We decided to visit the Tweetsie for a day trip and come back home.

you'll have to take a chance, if you go up there and only stay one night they will let you do it. Its crazy I know but we have done that before. Go with no reservations just stop at one and they usually let us stay for just that night. If not you will have to go outside of boone to one of the smaller areas.

When I was at ERAC we charged people for a rental car for the whole weekend!
I was the nice guy though and took off the extra day

Alot of Beach Hotels have a three night minimum on holiday weekends too.

Hey, Princess, haven't seen you in ages! How ya been doin'??

I agree with the just-go-up-there idea. I've done that plenty of times (when attending national conventions), and have always found a room. If you have to stay outside of Boone, it won't be that far away. The prices might be better anyway.

    Have fun!!

Hi Frgger! I'm doing great - my job is keeping me busy and my son's football practice is keeping me away from my desk often, so here I am! :) We're planning to go there anyway and after Tweetsie, we'll check motels outside of Boone. Hopefully, that'll help. Hope you have a great weekend, Frogger!

CakePrincess - As terrible as it sounds, I own a vacation rental and I'm requiring a 4 night minimum for holiday weekends. This is because if it rents to the first person that comes along for only 1 or 2 nights, you lose out on the people who wanted it for 3 or 4 nights. So that's the reason behind it. Although...if people still have something available for this weekend, they should honor anything that comes along. I will always take anyone if it's last minute and the place is available. It's better to make a little bit than nothing. (My rental is in Wilkesboro, by the way if you're ever interested!) ;)

Now it makes sense to me. Is owning a vacation rental worth it and profitable? I noticed many people own it even though they only use it one or two times a year.

We just started it in June. My husband is a builder, so it's worth it for us because our cost was lower than it would be for someone else. As of today, we haven't had to pull any money out of our own pockets to pay for any of the mortage or expenses, I've rented it enough to pay for it. So that's great, and anytime we want to go out there we just block out those dates. Someone we know who owns a condo at myrtle exchanged a week with us, so now we get a free week at myrtle anytime we want! There are definitely perks, we'll see how it does the rest of the year, but I like it, it gives me something to do.

That's great to hear for you guys! I'm glad you liked it and give you something to do. My family and I are thinking about having one someday, perhaps next year. My hubby is a builder, too, so that'll be handy.

good luck to you guys! he's been wanting to do one for a long time, but i was a little nervous about it. he wanted one at the beach, but i can't take too much of the beach, i get claustrophobic down there! so we settled for the mountains, and someday we might add another one if it keeps doing well.
