River Dell Teacher Recognized for Outstanding Work

    Enhances Curriculum Through Innovation
    Thomas Named County's Outstanding Math Teacher

    CLAYTON-- Vicki Thomas, a fifth grade teacher at River Dell Elementary
    School, has been selected as the 2005 North Carolina Council of Teachers
    of Mathematics Outstanding Elementary School Mathematics Teacher for
    Johnston County. Mrs. Thomas was nominated by her principal for this
    award. In addition to her regular classroom duties, Mrs. Thomas coaches
    a math club for students after school that focuses on using math in real
    world situations. She also presents locally and at the state level on
    Accelerated Math and math projects that she and her students complete
    each year to enhance the math curriculum.

    This award, sponsored by North Carolina Council of Teachers of
    Mathematics (NCCTM), is designed to recognize and reward those
    elementary school teachers who make mathematics exciting, and who
    nurture their students' enthusiasm by getting them involved in
    mathematics fairs, projects, and competitions which extend and enhance
    everyday classroom experiences. Mrs. Thomas is a teacher who succeeds
    in motivating students to excel in mathematics.

    "Mrs. Thomas is an excellent teacher and is very deserving of this
    award. We are very fortunate to have dedicated teachers like her
    teaching our students in Johnston County," said Cary Lane Cockrell,
    Coordinator of Elementary Curriculum.
