How sad - I feel so bad for these parents........ http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/3124175/ Boy found floating in fountain dies Posted: Jun. 29 11:50 a.m. Updated: Today at 10:35 a.m. Clayton, N.C. — A 4-year-old boy died Monday morning after being found floating in a fountain Sunday while his parents were cleaning a childhood-development center in the Riverwood Athletic Subdivision. Police said Derek Casanova-Gonzalez wandered away from his parents, near Charleston Drive, shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday. Derek's parents, Gil Alonso and Erika Gonzalez-Trejo, both of Johnston County, began searching for him and found him in the outdoor fountain, police said. Derek was unresponsive, and Alonso began performing CPR on him. The parents called 911, and Clayton emergency medical workers and police officers responded. Derek was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh, where he died Monday, police said. People who live in the neighborhood described the fountain as kid-friendly. The developer purposely designed it to be shallow. “Actually, I take my neighbors little girl up there (the fountain) quite a bit,” said Teikeisha Beddoe. “I’m shocked, literally, I’m in shock.” “It doesn't take much water to drown. Unfortunately, it doesn't take much water,” neighbor Kim Stotz said. Investigators said Derek is autistic.
Sorry but I would feel a little bit more bad if they hadn't been letting there 4 year old autistic son play outside with no supervision! This could have been so prevented!!
That statement irritates me. No fountain can be "kid-friendly" unless it's surrounded by a fence that a child cannot possibly climb.
I agree - I thought the same thing when those twin boys almost drowned last week. You have to watch your kids every second folks!!!! :?
A foot deep is still 11 inches too much when it comes to kids, but I do agree with you that they should not have let their autistic son roam around freely....well any 4 year old for that matter, autistic or not.
It doesn't take much water for drowning to happen. Remember the boy that drowned after swimming a few weeks ago. Children should always be supervised around water.
I don't think they can sue for being stupid and letting there kid play with no supervision. But then again that is the stupid world we live in today!
I am very familiar with that fountain. He also had to cross one if not two roads to get to it, it's not like it was right next door to where the parents were. This is in no way Riverwood's fault. Strictly on the parents in my opinion. A tragedy for sure, but the parent's have no one to blame but themselves.
Yep, yep, yep. It is a true tragedy but one that could have been prevented by the parents, sad but true and i hate to think of how they must feel on top of losing their child, but i would not be surprised to see them file a lawsuit, it seems to be the thing to do these days.
Unfortunately it is very easy to judge. None of us were there, we have not heard from the parents, so we really don't know all of the facts. Accidents happen. I think it said the child wandered off without the parents knowing. He could have been left for a few minutes (watching TV, playing a game) and when the parents came back, he was gone. No one watches their children 100% of the time, so let's give these parents some slack. There's not a person out there that hasn't turned their back for a few minutes to take a phone call, or complete a household task. I think they've learned their lesson, so it's not helpful to everyone to point fingers. It's sad regardless. OK, I'm ready for the backlash from my statement.
No backlash and i am sorry if it came across like i was judging. My statement was basically about the threat of lawsuit that had risen from other posters. i do feel very sorry for them and like i said, i cannot bear to think how they must feel knowing they could have prevented it.
Isn't it consider neglect Its like a child left in the car by itself. Shame that no one was watching the lil boy. I don't even let my girls out on the front porch without any supervision.
