So what kind of dogs are they?

I could almost say I have 5 dogs, with the neighborhood pack congregating at my house in the mornings  .

fur only provides so much protection from the elements. (not that we've had many elements this year)

i'm sure part of my confusion is being from up north where of course you couldn't leave an animal outside in the winter, but this is just a concept i've never understood... why do people have animals if they just live outside all the time. how do you enjoy them? (and please dont say "i go out to the back yard and enjoy them out there")

I have a big dog. Big dog = big area to stretch her legs. Keeping her inside would be cruel.

My big dog is more like a small horse! 95+ pounds of lean muscle who very much enjoys running around in our big back yard and sleeping in her carpeted dog house. :D
