Anyone know if the cafeteria manager at our public schools get a commission on the number of lunches they sell?

My kids class is having a pizza party and so other classes in the same grade decided to join in and do the same. The cafeteria manager is ****ed because no one will buy lunch that day from the classes in his grade because of the pizza party and now they are not having the party because she is ****ed off. I am asking myself why she would care unless she is making a commission from the lunch sales.

I don't think they make a commission. Maybe it has more to do with planning - maybe food has already been ordered and they will lose money on the amount of food not sold?

just guessing but probably more the scenario in this case...... But she still has to cook for the rest of the school.

This is exactly the case. The order way in advance and have the menu / numbers filled for all kids. This takes away from their profit as well since that would be 150 +/- students not buying the "extras" .........

Teachers just need to coordinate with the cafeteria ahead of time I guess.

totally correct - loads of pre-planning & now at the END of the year they are all super careful to have little or no WASTED foods...Major budget cuts and all that...

plus since school is almost out - they will have to 'eat' (no pun intended) that expense I would imagine. You'd think that teachers would know that they need to make arrangements like that ahead of time - or run it by the principal or cafeteria manager before giving it an 'okay'. :?

I sub at school and just yesterday teachers were planning their pizza parties. The lead teacher went and talked to the cafe manager and she said she was fine with them doing pizza but that it would have to be run through the principle. The pizza could be froze until the fall. The managers don't get a commission off the lunches but they are accountable for over ordering and they have to order in advance. I do think that they get something (bonus, etc) off of the extras they sell but don't know for sure. They drive me crazy asking the kids everyday if they want a snack even if they see they will not have enough money for lunch for the next day.

Actually, if the school is on the federal free/reduced lunch program, the students on the program must be offered the lunch from the school. If they are doing a pizza party later in the day, after lunches are over, no problem. If they do it during lunch, the entire county can lose eligibility for the program.

Perhaps the school could donate the pre-planned portions to an organization that needs it?
