Another thread discussed the upcoming bond issue but I have 2 questions about the schools I was wondering about.

    1. What is your take on Year round schools? I personally think they make sense. The agrarian school calendar is outdated. YRS would help better utilize the space we have. I would take some adjustment but may be worth it

    2. I heard a proposal to have 2 superintendents in Wake Co. One an educator to handle curriculum and a second a non educator with business experience to handle issues like construction, purchasing etc. They manage a 1 billion dollar system over there, sounds reasonable.

I was just wondering on opinions about this.

I like the idea of year round schools as well, and have called the central office and discussed this with the person heading up this committee.

Not sure about the 2 superintendents idea, never heard of it before but it makes sense. Somethings gotta happen, I am not impressed with the quality of our schools.

Our family uses a year round calendar for our homeschool. We school 9-10 weeks with 2 or 3 weeks off between sessions. We all get a break just about time we need it. Our "summer break" is 5-6 weeks, beginning Memorial Day and ending just after 4th of July. The year round calendar works wonderful for retension of information. We don't have to spend 1/4 or 1/3 of a year reviewing the prior year. I also find some of our best schooling is done during July and August when it is often to hot to be outside, other than swimming. Year round schooling works well for us.

I would not be opposed to year round schools but I do have a few concerns:

    1) At a public meeting a few years ago to discuss year round schools the representative was asked what would happen if a family had children in several different schools (ex. elementary, middle and high school)? Would they all trac out at the same time? We were informed at that time that they did not have the ablility to make sure that they would. They could try to make sure that siblings in the same school would trac out together but even that could not be guaranteed. Some parents rely on older siblings to take care of their younger children. If they were not out of school at the same time the parents would be forced to find and pay for childcare. Not to mention how hard it would be to schedule a family vacation with children on possibly 3 different tracs.

    2) My other concern was that the schools would not get the thorough cleaning in the summer like they do now. I know at my child's elementary school the custodial staff would spend the summer cleaning the whole school really well. I know that may not sound like a big deal but when you have a child who suffers from asthma and allergies to dust and mold it can be important.

I am sure that both of these conerns could be addressed however I am not sure that our county is ready to address them.

I know parents in Wake County and the sibs don't track out at the same time. Get's kinda tricky if you have 3 kids on 3 different tracks...2 at the same school.

Year round schools for elementary is a great idea, I am all for that.

However, with middle & high there becomes a problem.
1- if you have younger siblings
2- if your child is in sports
If the child is tracked out they are still obligated to attend practice & as well as all school functions ex: games, concerts, mettings & so on.

I have met several parents in the wake year round. They have those above issues right now. It is easier when they are in elementary.

I agree with them on that, I hope they can resolve this issue at hand so that we do not become another Wake county
