Vicky's Kids Selma Middle Students Joining the Fight Against Cancer SELMA-- The 60 members of the Selma Middle School National Junior Honor Society have become involved in the upcoming Relay for Life event fundriasing event against cancer in a big way. At a time in their lives when "fitting in" is important, they have chosen to take a courageous stand and "stand out" on behalf of the millions who suffer from cancer. The impetus behind the action is former teacher Vicky Ivey, a seventh grade teacher who passed away due to cancer last year. In her honor, they have named themselves "Vicky's Kids." The most notable event on their calendar is a "Boys to Babes" fashion show on March 16 at 3:30 p.m., when the school's male students and staff will model trends for females. The Smithfield Dress Barn has graciously agreed to provide the clothing, and school principal Catherine Bennett will be dressed in a tuxedo as the Master of Ceremonies. The culmination? A coronation of course! "Miss Relay for Life" will be crowned for her courage and composure. Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. The event will take place in the gym. Honor Society members will also sell purple rubber bracelets for $3 each or two for $5, with proceeds going to Relay for Life. Additionally, teachers will participate in "Planning for a Cure." For $5, they can buy a raffle ticket to win an additional planning period. Three names will be drawn, and the school's administrators will teach classes while those teachers utilize the additional planning time. The Honor Society will also sell luminaries and ribbons.
