Hi, I am trying to teach my child to appreciate what he has. When I was in school, we had different service opportunities available. I would love to get him involved in helping those less fortunate other than donating clothes, food, etc. If anyone has any ideas or links to organizations, I would love to hear about it. Thanks, Gia
With Love From Jesus allows volunteers of any age. Our church is set up to volunteer weekly and kids often come to help. I know they would appreciate any help you and he could give. www.withlovefromjesus.org
During the summer months, the elderly and those with health issues that have no air conditioning can benefit from just ordinary box fans. Perhaps you and your child could orchestrate some sort of fan drive to collect money, purchase fans and donate them throughout the area to several missions. I'll just bet that if your child seems to be the leader of the drive, he'd get some free publicity from the TV and radio stations, as well as a few newspapers. Just an idea.
What about Basic Needs ministry at 4042? They might let him come in and work a bit, not sure if they have an age restriction or not?
They have "children's day" at the Food Bank every first Saturday of the month. They can sort food, clean, stack cans etc... Let him get a dose of all the food that gets distributed for people who can't afford to buy their own.
Thanks for mentioning this. I just looked at the website and Kids Day is the 2nd & 4th Sat from 2-4 in Raleigh and the 4th Sat from 9-12 in Durham.
Council on Aging in Clayton is always in need of volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels. You can take your 8 year old to deliver the meals. The elderly receiving Meals on Wheels love to see kids. Call the Clayton Senior Center 553-4350 to volunteer. Tell them Bucky suggested you call. I have been delivering Meals on Wheels for 10+ years. If you can't volunteer to do one day every week, they need substitute drivers they can call when a regular driver is out.
Johnston County Animal Protection League is always looking for volunteers to clean cages, feed and play with cats at Garner Pet Smart stores. This is a great family volunteer opportunity. Each month you decide how many days you can help and which days ... it could even be just once a month. On your day you can go any time between mid-afternoon till store closing. It takes about an hour. http://www.jcapl.org/
I know mine would yell either way! Again, thanks for the info. I want to take my 7 year old to volunteer.
