THREE BLOOD TYPES AT LESS THAN A DAY’S SUPPLY

Red Cross Asks Donors to Donate Now

Two weeks into the new year, the American Red Cross faces a severe shortage of several blood types. Locally, supplies of type O negative, B negative and A negative blood are at less than a day’s supply despite repeated calls to donors to give blood over the past month.

The Red Cross is asking blood donors to donate immediately to prevent supply levels from dropping even further in the coming days and weeks.

“It is important to note that coming off of a major holiday period, the need for blood never takes a holiday,” says Robert F. Fechner, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region. “In addition to the holiday challenges, during the winter, donations drop and the supply of blood often dips to dangerously low levels.”

While all blood types are needed, the low supply of type O blood is of particular concern. Type O is the most commonly used blood type. O negative blood can be used for all patients, but it is often essential to the treatment of trauma patients, newborns and women who are pregnant.

Blood drives are scheduled at various times and locations across the area.

I haven't done it since DS was a baby, I never find out about it till it's too late to go and do it. That's why I'm so glad of this, expecially since I am O+.

YES! I had many people donate last year who were diabetic and on medication. The "Who May Recycle Life" pamphlet I have from the Red Cross states that even with an insulin pump it is possible for you to donate. (If you've ever had an injection of bovine insulin made from cattle in Europe since 1980 you're ineligible...)

My son usually donates when he can. I know every blood drive they have had at the HS he has donated. I can't donate because I am anemic and I have had a blood transfusion and I am not sure how many years after you have that you can donate, but the big thing is the anemia. My son and I are both A+ though

I can donate again as of next week, so I'll take my O+ blood to one of those drives! Thanks!

Hubby didn't know what he was until we had kids. Well he still REALLY doesn't know. We've deduced that he has to be either B+ or AB+ Reason being, I'm A- Our son is AB+ Our daughter is B+... So he either has to be B or AB+, and he says that's close enough for him, he's a puss. 8)
