Students Tour School Museum of African, African-American Artifacts SMITHFIELD-- On Friday, February 25, the library at Smithfield Middle School was transformed for one day into a Black History Museum, complete with student tour guides and parent volunteers. For the entire day, students filed past the exhibits while their peers explained them, and videotaped broadcasts were shown. "Curator" Rezelle Williams, who has traveled extensively in Africa, conceptualized the idea and led the transformation. She also served as a docent who explained the uses and reasons for artifacts carefully laid out on tables throughout the media center. A wooden chair, she explained, was made of two separate pieces so that it could be carried while walking. The royal dress she wore was indicative of African fashion sense. Some of the artifacts were actually loaned by North Carolina State University.
