In the last few threads many of us have vented of the long list of supplies and troubles some of us are having w/ IEP's. To let others know we are not totally against the schools, I thought it was time for a friendly thread about some of the positives our kids' schools are doing. I'll start and hope others will follow. I love the fact that at Westview there is a friendly office staff!-- thanks guys. I also admire Mr. Vitrano at Westview for taking the time everyday to step out of the office and interact w/ the students in the halls and in the classroom. I think that is the only way principals can truly see the heart of what is going on in every school. In addition to that, whenever there is a problem there, they are quick to address it. Those are my positives of my kids' elementary school. What are some things you all enjoy about your kids' schools??? Let us know. Stephanie--mom to 7
I love Mr. Weakly at MES. He has helped my son keep his faith in school. When we were having such awful trouble finding out what was wrong with my son, we discovered that he could take his spelling tests orally and pass, but when written, he would fail.... The teacher said she was too busy to accommodate him without and IEP. Mr. Weakly had my son come to his office every Friday and he gave him his test himself. It became a huge treat. Once we got the IEP in place, my son was disappointed!!! We were so sad to leave McGee's Elem this year. But lo and behold our new addition is in first grade, so we are back!!!!
Way to go JCS for only having 2 schools miss AYP! If you check out Durham and Wake County, you will see that this is a great accomplishment. AYP is tough to meet, and the two schools that didn't make it will do better this year I'm sure. Way to go JCS for giving a quality education!
Positives to my child's school? Well they have a chorus and she likes to sing. She'll be in it this year. The choral director is a great woman. Besides that...we'll have to wait and see. Frogger
Well this yr I have to wait and see how the new teacher goes, but I'm thinking it might be another good one. I have to thank Miss Styers for helping my daughter read better, took the time to work with her after school once a week and Mrs. Bailey as well. They both worked very hard as well as we did at home. My daughter is very excited to go back today, but she has to visit her old teacher first lol. Sheri
Positive thought about school traffic.... It goes the other way! Whoohoo! My ride to work will be sooo much better now ! Frogger
Well, I walked MM into the office, got her corrected schedule, and even though one of her girlfriends was being walked to the classroom by her father, left her there on her own accord to get to class....alone. I've never NOT walked her to class the first day. Sigh.......... Oh, the positive? The school had her corrected schedule in the office just like they said they would.
Jen, Little One just called me. She's in the carpool line. We talked about what whe's wearing and her excitement of the day. This is the first time I haven't taken her to school on the first day  . Hung up the phone and felt mighty empty. Danged divorce  . Frogger
And I thought I would be the only one feeling guilty about not walking my child to class on the first day (middle school). It just doesn't seem possible, they grow up too fast.
I walked DS in, because of all the "Wish List" items, he couldn't carry it all! Unfortunately, every other parent at Riverwood did the same. I believe the enrollment is 663, there are nowhere near that many parking places. I had to park a country mile away! I've never seen it like that up there, it's always busy, but this morning was insane! But I got a work-out hiking!
We are very excited about our teachers at West View this year although we were also very happy last year. I feel like our kids get a lot of individual attention and everyone is very caring. I have a lot of Wake Co. friends who complain about elementary teachers who barely speak to their kids at orientation and on the first day. They aren't allowed to send in home-baked goods and apparently are pretty restricted on parties as well. I am really glad we ended up out here. Cleveland was great, too; my second grader still wants to go back and visit Mrs. Royals and Mrs. Furlong. That said, I hear middle school is a different ball game and I have one going next year. I hope you middle school moms will keep us posted on how things are there.
I didn't walk my middle schooler in this morning either....AND I put him on the bus for the first time. He was so excited I felt like I had been depriving him all of the years doing carpool.
