    Calling All Veterans!

SMITHFIELD-- Select students from all six high schools in Johnston
County will gather at Smithfield-Selma High School at 10 a.m. on
November 11 (Veterans' Day), to honor veterans with a special show of
talent. An all-county band, chorus, and Jr. ROTC unit will conduct an
hour-long program entitled "A Salute to Our Veterans." Superior
Court Judge Knox Jenkins has assisted the planning of this event by
securing General Hugh Shelton as the featured speaker. General Shelton
is a four-star general who served in many capacities, most notably as
the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

The school system has enlisted the help of Ricky Byrd with the Johnston
County Veterans' Administration to aid in getting the word out to
VFW's and American Legion groups. Some of these posts are planning
    exhibits for the event.

But Dr. Anthony Parker, Superintendent, a former Marine, wants all
veterans to come out and be a part of the celebration, whether they are
in an organization or not. "This program is going be very special not
only for the veterans but also for our students. It is important that
they realize how much has been sacrificed for the everyday freedoms that
some of them take for granted."

"We are expecting a big crowd of veterans and their spouses," says
Patrick Jacobs, principal of Smithfield-Selma. "Students from all over
the county are really looking forward to putting on a show. A
complimentary lunch of turkey and dressing will be served in the
school's dining room to all who attend the service. We hope all
veterans in Johnston County will take time out to come."
