My oldest son will be starting kindergarten next Fall (I know it is a ways off... but I was just trying to get him and me prepared!!!).

    Couple of questions...
    1) When, where, and how do I register him?
    2) What is "expected" of him as far as knowledge before the first day of class. I know that when I started kindergarten I knew nothing other than how to behave. I think we mostly have that under control... but I heard some parents talking a few days ago about how the kids should know the alphabet as well as the sounds of the letters and some spelling and some reading. My son can identify the letters but that is all. He knows all of his colors and many shapes. He can count pretty well to 100 with some minor help along the way. He definitely knows more than I did when I started but it sounds like it may not be enough.
    3) My son still takes naps during the day, mostly for my sanity. Is there still nap time in kindergarten?
    4) What is a typical day like in kindergarten in a Johnston County school?
    5) Have the latest district maps been released yet for 2007-2008 school year? We live practically next door to West View so I hope that is where my son will go. Not sure how it compares to Cleveland (I keep seeing that Cleveland does very well in End of Grade testing). West View is probably too new to judge on that basis.

    Thanks for any info!!!

There is usually registration in february or March depending on your school.
There really is not much expected at the time of starting school, by the end of school the child will be able to do all that you had mentioned. They do like the child to know how to tie their shoes though. In kindergarten they will learn their ABCs, they will count to 30. they will learn sounds and they will rhyme. My son knew nothing when he first started kindergarten and he did really well. My daughter is in kindergarten now and they start school at 8:30. Her bus comes at 7:40. They get to school and they read and color and do centers. Then they have lunch and then there is the elective such as art or music or gym. There is recess and snack. There is nap time, it usually last for about 45 minutes. They use a towel as oppose to a mat for nap time. Your child is going to love it : )

They need to also know, or they will be asked when they are assessed before school starts, their address and phone number, shapes, colors, letters and the sounds they make, numbers, and everything else you said and ditto what cheer bear said. My child goes to River Dell and is in K now.
