Smithfield, NC – State and local personnel will continue to aggressively monitor the air quality in the general area of the stump dump fire located on Loop Road for abnormal carbon monoxide levels. Weather conditions are predicted to be similar to Tuesday night; therefore, carbon monoxide levels may rise and once again become an issue. Therefore, as a precaution, a voluntary evacuation shelter will be opening at 7:00 pm tonight at the Clayton High School gym located off Robertson Road. Individuals with health and respiratory problems are encouraged to limit their outside activities. Should individuals experience any adverse health related issues such as headache, shortness of breath, dizziness or fatigue, they are advised to contact their primary care physician. If you notice any abnormal symptoms in your pets and livestock, you are advised to contact your veterinarian. Loop Road continues to be closed except for local traffic. Citizens should avoid this area if at all possible. If driving in the area citizens should continue to use caution due to dense smoke. It is recommended that citizens turn off their heating and cooling systems to reduce the potential for smoke infiltration into their homes.
