Missing the I40 section to Cleveland area and then to Wilmington..

I-40 doesn't go to Cleveland. The Cleveland interstates are I-90, I-80, and I-77. They did put Cleveland in the wrong place. It's a lttle too far east, about where Erie, Pa. should be.

    (I know you weren't talking about that Cleveland. )

You're right. Maybe I should have specified "our" Cleveland as oppsed to the other Cleveland,
    too funny...

Now, if we could just develop a East West corridor that reaches from Cedar Island to I-40, like the Florida Turnpike. I'd be willing to pay to avoid/bypass Goldsboro, Kinston (New Bern isn't that bad) and Havelock (worst of all).

Is that the fastest or shortest way to get to Hatteras or it the land route quicker?

Since I don't drive to Hatteras, I would defer to others who do. I would imagine that the quickest route is via 64 East. The ferry system from Cedar Island to Ocracoke takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and then another 30-45 min for the Ocracoke to Hatteras Island. The ferry trip is worth it, ONCE. Kinda like visiting South of the Border..lol

I head home to Morehead and points East, thus the drive for me on 70.

The drive from Raleigh to Morehead, via 70 goes through Clayton, which can add up to 25 minutes on a summer weekend jsut to get through, Goldsboro which is a pain, Kinston another pain, New Bern quite easy until you get to James City, which is a minor irritation, and then Havelock...the worst section. What I am told is that they reason why planned development outside Havelock is on hold is that its one of the last few habitats for the red cockaded woodpecker..

I've done some surveying of folks in Charlotte, W-Salem, Boone. They ususally head to Myrtle as part of their beach life. They like the coastal visitors when we come to the mountains, but seem to choose another state, thus not reciprocating with their recreation dollars. I understand that the drive to MB from Charlotte is probably faster with Interstate most of the way, yet I would hope that that they would remember that what goes comes around, goes around.

NC Beaches and Coastal recreation needs your money more than Myrtle.

The fastest way is via route 64. They have widened it all the way through Manteo into Nags Head. Very nice drive! What used to take me 4.5 hours to Nags Head, takes me only about 3.5...sometimes less. It's another hour or so into Hatteras via Route 12.

Ahh but there is not the infrastucture for entertainment in the North as is in MB. Golf, strip clubs, malls, strip clubs, a better private aquarium than any of the public ones here, strip clubs, dinner theaters, strip clubs, tons and tons of visitors, strip clubs, better access via 40/17 connection than the rest of the coast, Brookgreen Gardens, miniature golf .. and did I mention the strip clubs?

    Wayne,
Too right....I was hoping for balance between the development and the reasons why folks wnat to go there.

It's now said that Topsail and Surf City are about what Atlanic Beach used to be.

Atlantic Beach is what Myrtle used to be,

And Myrtle is Vegas without the hookers and gambling.

And, yes, I believe you did mention strip clubs....or do thery refer to them as "gentleman's clubs" now?

All that (I'm not certain about the importance of the strip clubs, I'll leave that to Wayne) but also the abundance of places to stay in Myrtle. I'm a Morehead native too, so I also have a NC beach bias, but it's getting impossible to find afordable hotels at NC beaches because everything is getting bought up by developers to build condos. Why would people choose to spend $80 (or probably more, I haven't priced hotels recently) a night to stay in Morehead so they can fight with the other thousand people for a parking spot at Ft Macon just to get to the beach, when you can spend about the same in Myrtle and stay in a beach front hotel. It sucks, but looking at it from a visitors standpoint, I understand.

I believe they may do just that, but a rose by any other name. I do not know about gambling other than the cruises and lottery, but there does seem to be enough "escort services" to cover the area well. ;) There are a couple of conventions that occur in the area each year and when I attended them in the past it was more golf during the day and clubs at night than work. I suppose it could be said that "What happens in Myrtle stays in Myrtle"

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!! Hat, think of what you're saying. The NC beaches are plenty crowded enough and getting more commercialized all the time. Don't encourage the types of people who go to Myrtle (and actually like it) to go to NC beaches! First of all, they won't have a good time. Secondly, after not having a good time, they will try to turn the NC beaches into another Myrtle even faster. Let's leave the NC beaches for those of us who actually like to go to the beach when we go to the beach. Thanks.

P.S. There are strip clubs in Wake Co., one just across the county line on US 70, and there are golf courses all over the place. You don't have to go to Myrtle for those things. (if you do go for golf, I've heard The Sands is a great course.)
