We are contemplating getting a couple of sugar gliders, I think I've seen some mention on here from some of you that you may have them. I've been doing some research online and am intrigued by them. Any thoughts? Things to watch out for? Regulations in NC? Heard at Petsmart tonight that you have to have some sort of permit for the joeys(babies) Any truth to that?

    Thanks for any info! :D

I have 8!!!! They are woderful little guys, but require a great deal of time to get them to bond.

They are nocturnal, so mine are just now getting up. (9 pm) Now that I got the kids to sleep I have to decide whether to be a good glider mom and go play with them or go to bed like I really want to. So my kids never get to play with them due to the conflicting sleep schedules.

They need 1-2 hours a day of out of their cage play time... But until they bond, they will just take off. So I use a pop up tent.

There is no commercial food out there that is proven to be good for them, so I make my own.

All in all they are wonderful, but if you dont give them the time they require you will never get them to bond.

Check out this website... it is fabulous. You can get diet info and just read what other people are going through.

From what I heard NC laws says it is ok to own them, just not breed them. (you cant sell them or even give them away without being licensed). I never really looked into it!!

Let me know if you have any questions... I love mine, but sometimes feel overwhelmed with a family and them etc...

Awesome website LJK, that was just what I was looking for. I am going to have to think long and hard about them, we have a 7 year old little boy and 2 cats, plus hubby and I both work and we are gone a lot on the weekends, so I want to make sure I have enough time to dedicate to them.

Can you take them with you when you travel by car?

Do they make a big mess like birds do with their food and such?

They are just so darned CUTE!!

    Thank You!

Some people travel with them, but I only have once. (Maybe because I have so many?) It is just a hassle for me... lots of people carry them around in their bra all day at work and school etc... but I have never gotten them that bonded. :( My life is just so busy.

Another few things to consider is cage space. They can glide 150 feet, so they need as big of a cage as possible. I have them in a 6 foot (tall and wide) cage! Takes up a lot of space. And they do have an odor. I dont mind it, but I am sure some of my visitors might.

But you are right. They are so cute. I just went in to feed mine their morning treat and it is so fun to watch them. They are very smart and personable. They like to solve a puzzle. I buy them toddler toys to play with... they really are a blast, but it may not have been the right time in my life to have gotten them. too late now! (and they can live for 15 years!!)

I'm sure they would if they weren't supervised, I'm not that irresponsible. That would be a mighty expensive cat treat.

We got up to 12!!!! I found 2 different famiies to adopt 2 each! 2 is a good number, 8 is a little crazy. But these guys are so well bonded to each other I can't separate them!

No, they are marsupials. Not related to squirrels at all.

I snuck 2 on a plane and trying to get through security they starting biting my boobs!! I looked like I had a neurological disorder, I was jumping and twitching.... I just knew I was going to get busted!!!

But I am not an avid bra-carrier. My 2 year old would squish them if he knew they were there!!!

Yeah, I was up at like 3 am trying to make it look natural. I put one in each side and wore a big bra, then stuffed my bra on top of them. they were each in a pouch, but I couldn't use a zipper pouch. (I was afraid of the metal detectors) so I used a pull string pouch. One managed to get out. On the hertz shuttle I had to reach in my shirt and pull one out... the man sitting next to me almost passed out. (and I am traveling alone with 2 small kids, not a fun trip!!)

Okay, I'm going to ask the obvious question. Why were you sneaking gliders in your bra on a plane? :)

Well, I was visiting my grandmother in FL and just so happened to find two gliders needing a new home. The airline I already had tickets for didn't allow them to fly... they did allow puppies and kittens etc... but no gliders (imagine that) and for them to fly alone on a different airlines was a huge deal and very expensive.... I ran out of time and panicked.... stuffed them in my bra and became a fugitive.

I figured since they were nocturnal they would sleep the whole way... didnt happen... they were scared and not at all happy with their new mom. It was a very stupid thing to do... but hindsight... ya know?
