I have 3 boys, 2 of which I would love to send to summer camp. They are 5 & 8, and I'd like something they could do together. I don't think my 5 yo would go anywhere he doesn't know by himself. Half-day is fine, since I'm a sahm, but would consider all day. The older one has done the soccer camp at the Y before, but youngest one can't do that yet, they have to be rising 1st graders at least. I don't want to do the one through that place on 42 (can't remember the name??) because they go on too many far away trips, and I'm not comfortable with that. Does anyone have any suggestions, any church groups or other places that have day camps? Just one week, maybe two tops. I am in the 40/42 area and would like to stay close to home.
the Y does week long day camps at the middle school on guy rd, but they're not soccer. our boy has done them for the last two years (he was 4 and 5)...
I 2nd the YMCA camps....my boys have been there since they were 5, and they are going to do their 'Upward Bound' teen camp this summer for a few weeks....the weeks are 'themed' and they keep them busy. They won't be together-together, as they seperate the huddles by age, but they'll be at the same place. http://www.ymcatriangle.org/Johnston_County_YMCA/Programs/Youth/Summer_Day_Camp.aspx
I didn't see any for my youngest except for Kindercamp. And the oldest one is too old for that. The 5 yo does not like change at all. I was hoping they'd have camps again at the old Y on Cleveland (where soccer is) because he's there alot, but I guess they're not having camps there anymore, according to the flyer and their website. I agree though, my oldest really liked the soccer camp, although didn't care for the basketball camp, but that's because he didn't care for b-ball. I just wish I could find someplace for them to be together...if anyone comes up with anything, please let me know. Also, I use Up & Away occassionally for drop off, do they have "summer camp", or anything special they do for the summer? I was just curious more than anything.
is your 5 yr old a 'rising' first grader? if so, they'll be at the same place, same camp, different huddles. The day camps are at Mcgee's til the last two weeks then they move to Cleveland. If you saw the inside of the Cleveland annex bathrooms, you'd be thankful for the Mcgee's site. and they have air conditioning at McGee's.
Camp Sea Gull is a week long camp. My daughter went to the girl's side, Camp Sea Farer, for many years and really enjoyed it. Camp Rockfish is another week long camp for both girls and boys. They have loads of fun, rock climbing, fishing, boating, horseback riding, etc. Local daily one that I know of is Camp Invention at East Clayton Elementary. Grace
That one we mentioned the other day in another thread, run by Mark who did the Interskate program. The field trips are AWESOME!!
Regarding the recommendation above to Kid's Clubhouse (run by Mark) - It is not run like a daycare where they are closely supervised. So, if your 5 year old is not able to look out for himself I would not recommend Kid's Clubhouse. Do not get me wrong, I think it is a great place for older children. I also agree that the field trips are very nice. But, having said that, when my child went there at 5 it was not a pleasant experience.
Marbles Kids Museum (Exploris) in Raleigh has 1/2 and full day camps. The prices were comparable to the Y (maybe slightly more). Not exactly local though. The Y also has a camp in the Wake Forest which could be sleep over or day camp. Noah's Landing (not sure if that right) the local area zoo has camps too, at least they did the last time I checked.
Lots of churches do Vacation Bible School in the summer. Some are during the day, others are in the evening and it's typically free of charge.
If you don't mind driving to Raleigh each day, my oldest DS did Camp Kanata one year. He did the overnight camp for a week, but they do have a day camp as well. http://www.campkanata.org/ He also went to Camp Oak Hill for several years because they have one week each summer just for kids with asthma. They have doctors and nurses on site to monitor the kids' asthma and administer meds. My son's asthma is very mild, but it was nice knowing they would take care of it should a problem arise. This is an overnight camp, maybe something you'll want to keep in mind for the future. http://www.campoakhill.org/ Youngest DS did the father/son mini camp at Camp Caraway one year. It was for rising 1st - 3rd graders, I believe. They loved it! http://www.caraway.org/ There is another place near here, but for the life of me I can't think of it right now. DS went to it last year with our church, but it was an overnight camp and I don't know if they do day camps or not. If I think of it, I'll post it. No experience with this one, but there's Camp Flintlock in Four Oaks, which has day camps. http://www.campflintlock.com/
