I checked the GCAA site, and their t-ball is for kids that are 5 by May. Is there a league around here for kids that are not quite 5?

Clayton Parks & Rec baseball starts at age 5, I couldn't find much info on Smithfield except Tarheel baseball league for boys starts at age 7.

OK, last question (that I cannot answer myself). Which do you prefer and why? The Y or McGees?

My 8yo did the y last summer, he had never played any kind of baseball/t-ball before and we wanted to see if he liked it before doing it through gcaa. First of all, their age groups were all over the place, I think there was a 4 yo on his team! But I think it'd be ok for someone young, who just wants to go out and have fun, try hitting the ball, things like that. They just go out in a big field, no real baseball field, and there's kids running around everywhere! Not the most organized thing ever, in fact, I don't even know if the coach ever talked to me once all season, but it was ok. For the age you're thinking, it'd probably be fine.

I don't know anything about McGees.

Garner Baseball is an option. It is serious baseball and your child will learn the game. The child must be 5 by April 30th. It is a little pricey but you get what you pay for in this case. They maintain 4 lighted fields. They do not start with t-ball--it is coach pitch--but playing t-ball with the YMCA (in my opinion) caused problems with my sons swing as he moved to coach and kid pitch. We have played with the Y, Clayton Little League and Clayton Parks and this is by far the best. My son learned more in the 1st 4 practices that he had in everything else combined. It is time consuming 2-4 events per week and we have had games that started at 8:00 on a school night. I doubt the younger kids would play that late. With multiple kids playing the field becomes your second home. Registration starts this month.

In my opinion GCAA is better. They are faaarrrr more organized have their act together vs. YMCA (which IS a great organization, please don't get me wrong) but my son played TBall with the YMCA and the coach was nice but totally unorganized, never communicated and you never knew what was going on. Not to mention that the field we played on at Flowing Waters was COVERED in ant hills.

Then he played soccer with GCAA and I was very very impressed...with everything about it.

Glad I found this thread. Is there anything for my son who will not be 5 until Sept. or is he stuck with T-Ball at the Y? He could easily play with the older kids if it were by 'talent' level but I doubt there is anywhere that it is. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Clayton Parks & Rec has baseball for 5YOs, but it does not specify when they need to be 5.

FWIW- We went with the Y. Their ONE night a week plan is best for our family. By no means will DS ever be the super star on any team. He's just not that into soccer or T-Ball other than wanting to play for FUN.
GCAA was just a little too much for us right now. If DS falls in love w/ Y soccer this spring we man try GCAA next fall. But I just do not see it happening.

We've always enjoyed the soccer schedules for the younger kids at GCAA. It's usually one night/week practice and a game on Saturday. The baseball I wasn't too thrilled about with 2 games a week, and a super-long practice, it was hard to fit that in.

My 3 yo will be doing U4 soccer this spring, and I can't wait, he's going to love it! He lives for soccer, from the time he was born, I'd been dragging him to watch his brothers play. Now they don't play anymore, but that's all he wants to do, he lives for the sport, and he's finally old enough to participate! The other 2 kids aren't doing anything in the spring, so it's going to be all about him for a change!

For real! The next one in line was born in August and the two behind him will be born in May as it looks right now. So thats not too bad.
