contact lenses. DD doesn't know it yet, but we're both going to go get fitted for contacts. She's been begging and begging, and with her being so active and playing ball, etc....I'm giving in. I don't know jack squat about contacts. Can someone give me a reasonable estimate on how much/how often, etc... Plus if anyone has any suggestions for types/brands/cheap places to buy them? Thanks!
I swear by them, although for the first couple of days, I swore at them and wondered what in the world had ever made me want toput them danged flimsy pieces of plastic in my eyes. Ask for several types of trial lenses..generally the higher the moisture content, the more comfortable whey will be. I wear soft lenses with a bifocal lense.... Once you get her fitted, and she must actually follow the protocol for wearing them and when to take them out, sanitizing her hands before putting them in...and the eye practitioner is ok with her progress, make sure you get a copy of the prescription....legally, it's yours... I use a discount lense via online...buying them at the local optical place is superexpensive.... I recommend the eye folks in Dr Lanes dental bldg, off Cleveland Rd near 42, behind CVS ion the taj mahal...good folks. I avoid the eye doc near FL..as does my family for good reasons. Good Luck......
That's where we go Hat6, but I didn't know he'd be able to give us samples. I most defintely will ask for them!
usually, after they do a contact lens fitting, which is seperate from the eye exam, and usually not covered by your insurance, they will suggest what they think is the best fit for a brand based on curve, etc. Normally you get a 10 day supply to see how they work out, which is best, you don't want to go and order a 90 day supply off the bat and find out they're horrendously uncomfortable. They should be so comfortable, that you shouldn't even know you're wearing them. I wear the Focus Dailies, that means I pop a new pair in every day (really if I wanted to I could wash them and get a few days out of them, and in a pinch between orders I have). I pay about $80 incl. shipping for a 90 day supply (180 lens, 90 for each prescription - my eyes are different rx's by about .5). I used to wear a two-week extended wear that I was able to sleep with in, but they were too comfortable, and I would let them go until they bothered me (that could've been 2 months instead of 2 weeks) and that was bad for my eyes, and I got scolded by the optician. My eyeballs were creating extra blood vessels to get more oxygen because contacts don't breath well. The newer ones are better, and I tried the Bausch & Laumb ones, but they weren't comfortable in my eye, so I've stuck with the Daily lenses, which I have to take out at night, because they are god-awful to sleep with in. I buy mine online at Lens.com, but I might try a site that someone posted on the other thread about eyeglasses online, they did have a lower price on my particular lenses.
For me, I don't mind taking them out daily. But I know DD. She's gonna fall asleep with them in her eyes, I bet. And her vision is a lot worse than mine, so envisioning her actually being able to see, to put them in, is hard for me, lol... $80/3 months = $26 a month. Guess that's not too bad.
I'll tell you what... if she falls asleep with those Dailies in a time or two... the discomfort she'll wake up to, might cure her of that quick. Its just this awful feeling of being able to actually feel them, as if they're not as well lubricated after no blinking all night.. and then to take them out when your eye is already slightly irritated is no joy either. Big TIP... never mistake the small bottle of super glue for eye drops! (even when you wake up with the extended wear in, you'll need to put some rewetting drops in to clear the lenses from overnight wear... so you don't see so well, and might accidentally grab the wrong bottle.) I used to keep both bottles in my purse...not allowed to anymore.
I only wear my Accuve II's (around $13.50 per box at BJs) on the weekends due to dry eyes issues. My daughter loves the new Accuve Oasis (around $26 per box at BJs), allows more oxygen to travel across the contact lens membrane to the eye therefore creating more comfort and less dry eye issues. DO NOT USE any of the contact lens solutions that have moisture ingredients in them, they have found out that this increases the chance of you getting an eye infection, the strenght of the solution is diluted by the moisture ingredients. Our vision coverage allows us the option of spending our allowable on glasses or using it on contact lenses per year. It also covers the eye exam, but not the lense fitting (average cost $80-90) which is seperate from the average eye exam. Good luck.
We've always used Dr Black beside Food Lion and never had ANY problems. In fact, he has bent over backwards, as has his staff, to take care of certain problems in the past. As far as purchasing contacts, I have found you can usually get them cheaper than from the dr's office. I've used BJ's and contactlens.com But another poster (on the eyeglasses thread I believe) cautioned again online purchasing. How old is your daughter? My DD started wearing them at about 12-13yrs old.
My mom took me to get my first pair when I was a senior in h.s., and back then it was just one pair that cost about $120, and they had to be cleaned religiously. Mom told me that she was footing the bill on the first pair, fitting, etc.... and after that I was on my own if I ripped or tore one. I was so glad when they came out with disposables!
One other thing - and I'm sure you'll get told all this at the visit. But you say she plays sports etc....but even with wearing contacts - if she gets dirt or dust in her face, contacts could be a real problem. And she will have to be very careful and deligent about how she handles them and sanitizing her hands and contacts.
I went to the guys in Dr. Lane's complex and was really happy with them too! I'm not your typical contact wearer. I wear the monthlys but end up wearing them three months or so cause I end up wearing my glasses a lot during the week if I just at home. If your daughter is very active in sports and is a first time wearer you might want to invest in their warrenty plan. They have a replacement lens plan that wasn't too shabby. It's a no questions ask plan. Especially nice if she ends up not being able to wear the daily disposable kind. AND I would call and get a price quote on Walmart and BJ's before you go. They have a price list there for Walmart.com and they pretty much are the same as or beat their price. Because I end up wearing mine longer than I'm really supposed too..shhhhh, don't tell. I ended up going to BJ's and getting mine cause they were a smidge cheaper on the color contacts that I love to wear. And as far as samples go. That doctor's office has a great policy I think. They see you for the exam. They fit you with a pair of sample contacts for a week or two to make sure that they are a good fit and that they are the right script. Then you come back in and he gives you your scripts or orders your lens. I was very pleased with them.
If I remember right you primarily do office work, but if you work in a manufacturing environment or chemicals you should avoid contacts.
