http://www.wral.com/lifestyles/travel/video/5059120/ The United States military have been missing the bomb for 48 years. They believe it part of it may lie beneath a field in Goldsboro.:shock::shock::shock:
I don't think this is news, I have been hearing about it for years. Ever since I moved to NC in the 1980's.
I've known of this for years. Given that the gov't doesn't want to stir up the hornet's nest that would become stirred, the story pops up once in a while, and nothing is done. One has to ask the question..at this point, what can be done?
Well, it's news to ME!! I've lived here 9 years and first I've heard of it. Seems like they could at least let the public know if they got all of it or not.
Well, one thing that won't happen (in spite of the fear mongering of the piece), it won't go "boom". Yes, the radioactive material may leak and pollute the ground water, but setting off a nuclear warhead isn't like popping a cap. It takes a good sized explosion just to start the chain reaction that is the nuclear explosion. You can't just whack it with a hammer and set it off.
REALLY???? Had NO idea. :jester: I watch the Discovery Channel, BTW. 8) Just not thrilled with the idea of some uranium just sitting there possibly uncontained. But that's just me.
Just Google "broken arrow goldsboro" and you'll find TONS of info on it. I am of the belief that since the capacitors were charged when it fell, they have since leaked down YEARS ago. There's really no way it could go off, even "IF" it is all there unless you dug it up, repaired everything, then recharged the capacitors, then droppped it again. Its only about 35 minutes away from my house, and I sleep very well at night knowing it aint ever gonna "pop".
Yep, I heard 'bout this years back. At one point I developed a theory which linked the contaimination of the groundwater in Goldsboro to the lack of teeth among residents. Turns out I was wrong; that's just how they roll down there. Cheap thrills and busted grills... that's a way of life!
Well, I'm just thrilled everybody else knew about it.:lol::lol: Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce can add it to the newcomer package? OK??:jester:
Of course the information concerning most of the failsafes for the bombs had themselves failed made the Goldsboro accident more critical. There was one in South Carolina that caused a bit of damage when the explosives used for detonation of the bomb went off on a farm.
I'd never heard of the Mars Bluff one before now. Very interesting. It really help portray how close we truly were to the brink of WWIII. Having to keep bombers flying around the clock fully armed is just amazing. Having to worry about A-bombs falling out of the sky due to equipment failure is insane. I'm too young to have dealt with all the cold war stuff, but it musta been a truly scarey time.
Yes, they can say they were the survivors of an atomic bomb dropped on the US.... not many people can say that. Yes, and the risk of an accidental start was very high. The dispruption of the communications from the EMP of an accidental detonation could have started the ball rolling and it would have been hard to stop it. Supposedly the Israelis had their nuke armed planes on the tarmac with armed weapons in both '67 and '73 with the expectaiton of removing the bulk of the Sryian and Egyptian capitals. Now the threat is more in the India/Pakistan or China theaters.
