Living In Style magazine came in my N&O today. On page 70 is a brief article with this excerpt:

" A train ride to celebrate the wonder of Christmas brings a little holiday magic to a mountain hamlet that for a few weeks each season becomes Santa Claus' home.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is again this year offering service to the North Pole, aka Whittier, NC, from the railroad's Dillsboro and Bryson City depots. The 90-minute Polar Express dinner train and a slightly shorter daytime excursion bring to life the beloved children's book by Chris Van Allsburg that was made into an animated film by Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis.

Singing chefs serve hot cocoa and Christmas cookies while the book is read aloud on the way up, and Santa climbs aboard at the North Pole for the journey back to make sure every child gets their own sleigh bell to keep"

Sounds like a great time and memory maker, especially for the kids.

I remember my first train ride almost 40 years ago: a short hop from Wake Forest to Raleigh.
