I'm quoting the whole article because of the way things scroll down and then off of the wmpm website. I think this is an important lesson that everyone can learn from, especially young people. Don't trust people you've never met, especially when it comes to money! :evil:

Couple Loses $10,000 In Scam
The Dunn Police Department is investigating two cases of counterfeit check scams, one of which has left an Erwin couple more than $10,000 in the hole. When Kimberly Spell saw a classified ad in The Daily Record for a clerical job, she thought it was right up her alley, so she called. The voice at the other end of the line told Spell she had the opportunity to participate in a mystery shopper program, evaluating the customer service and efficiency of Wal-Mart’s wire transfer service. Spell was sent a money order for $2,775, along with a checklist of criteria on which to evaluate the Wal-Mart employee. She was told to cash the money order at her own bank, keep $300 for payment and use the rest to evaluate the wire transfer service, sending it back to a fictitious relative named Tracy Spell. When Spell went to her bank, State Employees Credit Union in Dunn, the money order raised eyebrows only because of the unusually high amount. The branch manager was called over to inspect the check. He verified it as authentic and Spell was given the cash. She successfully sent the $2,475 to Laura Spell in Ontario, Canada, all the while paying careful attention to her checklist criteria and the attitude of the Wal-Mart employees. Following the transaction, Spell called the mystery shopper company to confirm the job was complete. The next day, promptly at 10 a.m., a second package arrived via overnight delivery and the same routine took place again. On the third day, two checks were enclosed in the overnight envelope. On the fourth day, the company in Canada sent Spell four checks, bringing the grand total to $23,055. When Spell went to her bank to start the day’s work with these four checks, she was told they, along with the first four she had cashed, were all fakes. All of the checks bounced, and Mrs. Spell and her husband, Howard Spell, will be held responsible for the more than $10,000 they wired away to an unknown person in Canada. The advertisement is no longer running in The Daily Record. The Spells are not alone. They are the latest victims in a ring of organized counterfeit check scams that have been sweeping the nation. The checks used by scammers are often indistinguishable from the real thing, even to bank employees. The checks sent to the Spells include all of the security features typically associated with payroll checks and money orders, such as watermarked paper on the back, micro-printed words within the signature lines and multicolored graphics on the front of the document. The scenarios proposed by the scammers are constantly changing, and include claims to international lottery winnings, working as a payment processor for a foreign company or the recent mystery shopper technique. In many cases, a person has even received payment for a legitimate service or product sold in excess of the asking price. The customer will then ask the seller to return some of the extra money, along with the product. When the check bounces, the merchant is missing his product and his payment and is responsible for the extra money - usually thousands of dollars - sent back to his scheming customer. Kevin Watson, branch manager of State Employees Credit Union in Dunn, could not comment on this specific case, but said in general people involved in these types of scams are held accountable for the funds they helped, however unknowingly, steal. “Generally on any returned checks, it always goes back to the person who presented the check,” Watson said. That's awful but i would have never done that ! I just lost everything from my bank account and hopefully will be having it back by the end of the month to a scam airline company ..But even before i went though what i hope none of you go through i still would never have done that ...Sounded fishy to begin with .

Poor things i hope the people are caught and punished to the max !

One very important lesson, if it is too good to be true,it probably is. Hate it happened though.
