So on Saturday, I took Fluffy Kitty to the groomers and she got a haircut. Well, she got shaved down, except for her head, tail and paws, so she looks like a little lion, all three pounds of her. From the moment I brought her back home, Snuggles Kitty has been very ugly to her. She hisses at her, and growls, and it's really starting to get on my nerves. Poor Fluffy can't even walk down the hall without Snuggles throwing a freaking hissy fit. Now I've chastised Snuggles and told her that she's being bad, but she doesn't seem to care, lol. Any ideas or tips?
When pets get groomed they smell different - the kitty who wasn't groomed may not be certain it's the same kitty who left the house. Try giving them treats side by side, having them be close, but not so they'll scuffle. After the kitty who wasn't groomed realizes its their original cat, the probs should stop. I go through this each time my one LH kitty gets groomed - even the dogs appear unsure for a little bit.
Some cats may seem a bit slow to catch on. Maybe they've heard 'curiosity killed the cat' and took it a bit too literally.
I would gradually re-introduce them, as though they are strangers. First, I would put them in separate rooms, where the door has a space at the bottom, big enough to stick paws under. Then wedge a toy under the door, so that both can play with it at the same time. After a couple days separated, switch them, so Snuggles is now in FK's room, and FK is in Snuggles's room. Also, during this period, take a small towel and rub it all over Snuggles, then rub it all over Fluffy Kitty, and then rub it all over Snuggles again. If you have a baby gate, after a week or so, open the door between the rooms and put up the baby gate. You'll have to supervise, so no one jumps over the gate. But it gives them a chance to sniff face-to-face. Do this a few times a day, with the door closed between trials. When there is no more hissing or growling, they are probably ready to be together again.
AL, I'm gonna be real honest here.... I barely have time to do my laundry, I don't have time to play referee between these cats, and I don't have a seperate room that I can lock one up in either, lol... Hopefully Snuggles will start behaving soon........or else I'm gonna have to beat her. I might could do the towel thingy though. Thanks for the suggestions, they just aren't realistic for me, lol...
ok, honest question here. Why shave the cat? Is this a strictly indoor cat? Again, just asking... Frogger
I have a cat we have shaved twice a year or so. He's a horrible self-groomer and despite my best efforts I can't brush him everyday. He'll get matted so bad and I'll get frustrated with it, and just bring him to Ms.Bianca at the PetSmart in Garner. She is wonderful with him, and he seems to enjoy prancing around with the new 'do.
Jennifer, Here is another trick I use. I have a squirt bottle filled with water. If I see a cat doing something s/he should not, I squirt the offender. I've used this to break up cat fights as well as train them to stay off the kitchen counters. Surprise is the key. Snuggles cannot associate the water with you, but with the action she is doing. When I am cat-training, I leave the water bottle out in a convenient place, so I can quickly and surreptitiously grab it and squirt. Oh and test the squirt range in advance. I can squirt a cat 15 feet away. AL...
We too employ the squirt bottle technique when our precious sir attempts to demand his rations by banging the blind cords whilst we are still aslumber. It works every time or at least buys us a ten minute snooze!
I swear by the squirt bottle method, although I found my 5 month old kitten in the kitchen sink yesterday. :? She was spayed 3 days ago and it hasn't slowed her down a bit. We're still learning boundaries! My 2 old boys, 10 and 8, wouldn't dare jump on the kitchen counters or dining room table.
Same here, I had to run one of mine off the other night. She carries around beanie babies, making this horrible crying sound. She camped outside my bedroom door the other night with it, I need some sleep! I have never figured out if she thinks they are kittens or what, but at 4:00am, I didn't care!:?
I need someone to talk me out of getting a dog I saw in the classifieds yesterday. I don't need a dog, I don't need a dog, I don't need a dog.................................................but she's so darned CUTE!
No matter how cute she is, if you know you don't need dog, you don't need a dog, you don't need a dog, you don't need a dog... repeat after me, I don't need a dog!
Sorry for the hijack Jen! Shoulda started another thread instead. Thanks Tassy!! I was thinking tonight she'd be a good walking partner since I can't get anyone else to go with me and I just keep getting more "fluffy" all the time. I've missed having one, not sure what my kitties would think though. Look at this face! http://4042.appcomm.net/cgi-bin/404...play_db_button=on&db_id=67776&query=retrieval
Jen, how about an update?? Thought I'd get your thread back on track..............are your kitties getting along any better?
