Greg Fsihel did a report a few years ago showing how that "old wives tale" is not correct.

Is this the same Greg Fishel who had to jump in the fountain due to his inaccurate snow forecast?

Greg Fishel doesn't know his *** from a hole in the ground. I wouldn't listen to a word he says.

I remember back in 2000 when Greg Fishel touted that the new doppler was only seeing about 3-4" of snow but we got more than 20". Now WRAL is dual doppler. The original one is across from the wal mart on 70. the second one that wral added is by the TV towers. But did you know there is a third doppler in the area? It is over off of Raleigh road just east of highway 210.

I have always been under the impression that that was a military use radar.

This air traffic control radar station?

if it was Military, it would be much more heavily guarded and the gate would be locked. Plus there would be military vehicles there.

I think it is used for the Washington Air Route Traffic Control Center, Area 2, which covers most of NC.

Here's some more details on it:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Route_Surveillance_Radar
    site number: QRL
    model: ARSR-1E
    USAF Sector: EADS
    FAA Sector: ASO Southern

FAA long-range radar site. Also known as Raleigh.

The one I'm thinking about looks like the picture below except it is a much darker green and can at times be seen from 40 heading east just past the 210 exit. on the left hand side.
