Scary HazMat emergency in Apex ... hope everyone you all know is safe. Miracle that there are so few injuries reported so far!

I figure it will be good practice in case we ever have another terrorist attack. Though i do feel sorry for Apex residents and their pets

Made me think of that new show, "Jericho" when I first heard about it this morning!

Yeah, one of my first thoughts went to the pets that are still outside or got left behind, after I heard so many people were ok ... wonder what it's going to do to their extra-sensitive eyes and ears, and from breathing it in.

IT IS A MESS!! I live in the town next to them (Holly Springs). They have shut down the hwy just at the entrance near town which is a main artery in the morning (Hwy 55). All trafiic is being dumped onto US 1, which is another main raod that "may" be shut down if the toxic cloud shifts. That will be a HUGE mess!!!

What I want to know is what are these towns thinking when they allow permits for these types of businesses? The plant itself is almost directly in the heart of downtown Apex and then right next door there is an Oil company with Petroleum tanks which also wound up exploding.

Wonder who the brain was behind allowing a toxic storage place with the potential to blow up to build right next to a petroleum plant that also has the potential to blow up!!

THAT is exactly what I thought of too! I remember seeing a commercial for the show; there was a 'cloud' and they were saying that rain was coming and that would make it worse, cause everything will come down! FREAKY!

I was wondering the same thing. Did they not consider that this could happen? Duh! If I remember correctly this chemical place was in the news not long ago for being fined for something. Anyone recall?

Remember that Apex was, until recently, a fairly small town. It wasn't until Cary started busting at the seams that people looked to Apex to live.

I agree. Now they are saying that the company that is burning had a 32 thousand dollar fine in March of this year. It is on CNN as their top story. now they are saying if it rains, it could effect the water depending on how much contaminated substance has polluted the air.

I just sent off an email to my family in florida to let them know i am ok. They are not familiar with the area up here

Yeah we already got the frantic phone call from the in-laws this morning who by the way are familiar with the area because they live in Wake Forest :)

that's what happens when town planning boards or county planning boards get greedy for tax dollars -- businesses are approved without the forethought of the long term impacts on an area -- adequate fire/hazmat/rescue -- emergency evac plans, land and water impacts, waste disposal ----

Just a note re: that area. Many of those businesses have been around for awhile so I am sure they were built before things like this were ever considered.(Clif touched on this)

Pretty cool thing they did though was reverse 911. basically 911 centers called residents on the phone and told them of the emergency and to evacuate. Unfortunately, I wonder how many people thought it was a prank.

I heard that Wolf, I also thought it was a pretty cool system to put in place. Just hope is doesn't get into the water supply.

When this plant was approved it was on the outskirts of town from the "old apex" area. Then the "new apex" was built and that made this business in the middle of the old and new. Am I correct?

The only problem with that wolf, is that so many people got rid of their land lines and use cell phones instead. I understand it was serveral hours later before those folks were reached?

Good Point Jenn. They also had police going door to door but in any emergency event it will take time. They could have set the Sharon HArris sirens off but imagine the panic that would have started!!!
