Are there ANY places around Smithfield, 40/42, garner that rent tuxes? Any suggestions on where would be the cheapest place?
There's a place inside the State Fair flea market that sells tuxedoes, shirts, cumberbunds, etc. I've purchased two additional shirts from them that were in great condition. I think I paid 6 bucks for both. It's much less expensive to buy one and maintain it than to keep renting them. In my mind, and more importantly, C6's, there's really never a bad time to own a good looking tuxedo for a formal night out. I'd recommend a conservative tuxedo that can be used for most any formal occasion. Avoid those that resemble the 80's fru fru pleated shirts, with pirate fluffs and cuffs..think Doobie Brothers on a bad day. A nice conservative, black tuxedo, nice white plain shirt with studs, perhaps a vest, bow tie and cumberbund, and also a regular black tie for formal occasions before 6 pm. Good Luck...
We rented both my son's tuxes from Jewels in Smithfield. Only problem we had with them was over a hat that we bought for his senior prom, but other than that, don't have any complaints.
a hat?????? 8) OK, from the POV of one of the "elder flatulents" on the board. Folks, take a look see through your high school annual this week. Look at the prom pics where we thought we looked so cool, then, and how funny it is to us now.... Parents, please keep some good taste and judgment for your teens for prom. I'm sure that the last thing they want is to be youtubed or emailed with their images as the ones that get sent around and viciously laughed at. It happens, and most of us have had a go at the prom pics that get sent around. Class and good taste are never fads...but will stand the test of time.
Oh lighten up Hat! Some kids like to do something different for prom vs. looking like everyone else. I see nothing wrong with a hat, in fact I think it's kinda cool  and I'm an old fart too! FF, do you know if Jewels is open on Sunday? Do you think their prices were ok? Thanks for the info!
H6 ~ Kyle wore a Zoot Suit to his Senior prom. He had the black and white shoes, the chain, and the hat. I am trying to find a picture of him all decked out.
I remember the pics. 8).. And I didn't say that there was anything "wrong" with anything. I was merely offering an alternative POV. Enjoy your day!
Here ya go H6. Now this was Kyle's choice. This is what he wanted, so.... How his Junior year, he wore a regular tux, but he wanted to do something different for his Senior year.
Oh, I know. I know he told me what some of the other tuxes looked like. There were the traditional tuxes and then there were the not so tradtional. He initially was going to wear a "western" type tux w/cowboy hat and boots, but when he saw this one, well that the western one went out the window. LOL
They are not opened on Sundays but here is their address and phone number and website (which I hope works): Jewel's Formals 101 S 3rd Smithfield, NC 934-4943 http://www.ask.com/bar?q=Jewel's+Formals&page=1&qsrc=121&zoom=&ab=0&u=http://216.117.145.32/ As far as pricing goes, I think we got Kyle's tux his Jr year for about $100 and then the one for his Sr year was a little more. Of course we had to buy the hat and his chain. Hope this helps.
I don't have any problem with a little "style", but will agree with Hat, particularly once you get to a certain level of maturity, a tux is a valuable asset to any man's wardrobe. I bought mine (basic black from Barry's @$150) about 20 years ago, to go to a black tie optional New Year's eve wedding. Over the years I've probably averaged wearing it at least 1-2 times a year, including getting married as "Dracula" at our Halloween night wedding. I started with black tie and cumberbund, but every now and then willl add some flair and get something alittle flashier. For really formal occasions, I have black patent leather shoes, but for the wedding on New Years Eve, I took a pair of wing tips and added different colored sparkles to the different sections, adding some dash and flash to the Paisley accessories.. I have worn sneakers once or twice to less than stuffy occasions. A basic black tux is very flexible, and never goes out of style. Properly cared for, even a modest priced one will last most of a life time. My main problem is keeping my weight subdued so that it still fits year after year!!!
Thanks FF. I am just trying to gather some info for some of my daughter's guy friends. I LOVE the zoot suit! Thanks for the link to their website . . . I have been trying to find it for 2 days! You'd think they would have something easy to remember as their address!
Also, I highly recommend the Formal Wear Outlet in Hillsborough. It's a little drive, but it's really worth it -- especially for Juniors. You can buy a tux for a tad bit more than you can rent one, and then you have it for the Senior year, too. Just change out the shirt/tie/etc -- and it's like new. They also have stunning dresses for girls for prom - at a fraction of the cost!
VIP Formalwear We got Tuxes there for ds's wedding. They are located on Wilmington St. in Raleigh between where 70 a nd 401 join and Tryon Rd.
K and G super store on capital Blvd has great tuxes at good prices for sale. It is a hip store and not all stuffy so the kids might like it there better. THat is where I bought my sons and he loves it. Thinks he as sauve as Bond, James Bond. got a good deal on stacy adams shoes there too in a size 15!
VIP provides a lot of the tuxes that retail places rent out. They take the retail coin and measurements, send the measurements and their cost to the VIP folks, who then alter the style selected to fit the measurements and send to the retailer for pick up. Lot's less expensive to go to the source. I've purchased stuff from them as well. Good folks.

Veronica not only has great prices, much better than the mall or other stores, she brings the Tuxes to your door. I was able to go and do other things while she took care of fitting the groom and groomsmen. Thank you so much. Also, the Tuxes were beautiful. Found this when I was looking for my sister's wedding for her husband to wear.
Second this recommendation. Both of my sons-in-law got their tuxes there as did both bridal parties. $99 gets everything from head to toe except socks and underwear. One was a Tommy Hilfiger tux, the other was a FUBU, so they do have it all from conservative to hip. http://www.formalwearoutlet.com/
