Princeton, N.C. — At least two people were killed Friday morning in an accident involving a car and a freight train, authorities said.

The wreck occurred along U.S. Highway 70 outside of Princeton. Authorities said the car tried to cross the rail line at Herring Road when the train hit it.

The Norfolk Southern train, which was loaded with coal, pushed the car about a quarter-mile down the track before coming to a stop, authorities said.

Two adults inside the car were killed, and a baby boy was thrown from the car upon impact and survived, authorities said. The infant was taken to WakeMed, but there was no word on his condition Friday afternoon.

Authorities estimated the train was traveling at 17 to 20 mph before the wreck, but it was unclear if the car tried to beat the train across the crossing. The crossing has no warning lights or crossbars to indicate a train is approaching and to block access.

The guy's name was Brannon Brady and I'm sorry I don't know his girlfriend's name. I'm so sorry for his parents and her family. The baby to my knowledge is almost a newborn or not far from it. He was that part of the family I remember from being a kid but never really knew him outside of family reunions. I'm at a loss of words.

Well I found out the baby is a new born. I don't know what could have distracted him from a train only going 17-20 mph but it really doesn't matter now. Who knows what happened. If you know anything about that area, it happened just one road past Bizzell Grove Church Rd, Herring Road, at Hwy 70-A. That's the highway that runs through Pine Level to Princeton at the crossing as the story said that doesn't have arms or lights. My Mom and Dad went out there and of course everyone is just a mess. I just can't wrap my thoughts around it.

Thanks to everyone for the condolences. I just hope if their truly is an afterlife that they are in a better place. I feel bad for saying his name because my Mom just called and said that his grandparents are being told as I type this. Geez. It goes to show you, when its your time, there is nothing that can be done to avoid it.

I just got home and read this on wral, my heart dropped immediately. This is so very sad, I am so sorry for your loss, as well as the rest of the families. What a horrible, tragic story.

  15. This is very sad. His name was Brannon and he loved Crystal his fiancé very much. They were both so excited about their newborn. Just a great young couple I had gotten to know over the last year and we hate to see this happen.

This is very very sad and it sounds like this may be the one in a million time when not having a baby in a car seat just might have saved his life.

This is too sad for words. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and the baby. I hope the baby will recover with no complications and that the family will keep the parents "alive" in memories and stories that they can share with the child.

Truly a heartbreaking story and perhaps the greatest loss is the void that will be left in the life of the child.

These rural crossings can be dangerous, however I can't see really there being too much that can be done for every single crossing. There are many along that railway that are simply cut across to people's homes. The speed of the trains through there are fairly slow by today's standards, however its often easy to underestimate a train's speed and with it loaded up with coal, even at 25 mph it packs a punch. The line will likely see an increase in coming years with passenger trains being added, so many of these crossings will have to be addressed with the likelihood of increased speeds.

With hopeful expectations that the little boy will live, I suppose there will be a fund set up for him. At least I hope so. Let's all keep praying for that little boy.

I just got a call that the baby has passed.....I know no words for the Brady's and Higgins family to help them through this tragedy. God bless them all.
