Can anyone tell me how they liked Upward Basketball? What times were the games on Saturdays? Did the kids have fun? Thanks
My daughter has played Upward basketball at Hocutt Baptist Church in Clayton for the last 3 years. She loves it. They usually practice once a week - practice starts after the first of the year - and the games are on Saturday. Game times vary by age, etc. I realize that some other Upwards programs start earlier in the year but his particular location doesn't start having games until Feb. I got the information from them and the regular registration ends the end of this month so if you are interested in playing there, call the church office and have them mail you an application. They have prayer before the games, someone gives a testimony during half time ( to the spectators ) and they have a short devotion for the kids at practice. They don't really focus on the score too much and don't really get too assertive in the games. Basically, just allow everyone to play and have fun. This is great, especially for younger kids just starting out. I've heard from some parents of older kids who start out in Upward but then prefer a more competitive league so their kids can really learn plays, etc.
My daughter got information sent home from school on this and we taking her to be evaluated / try out for Cheerleading!!
I was "thinking" it meant tryingout but I am not sure. I took it more or less as a tryout just in case they have more people sign up then they have spots open? Our evaluation will be in Garner because it is for K5 to 2nd grade.
The program at our church (First Baptist in Garner) uses the evaluation to determine the skill level of each player, and build teams of kids with varying skill levels. The main intent is to be sure that they don't end up with one team having all the "star" players, or one having all players at beginning level. The best players will be spread across multiple teams, same with the beginners, etc. This makes the teams more balanced against each other.
Blessed Our church office is 553-6650. The secretary/receptionist can give you the information you need. We'd love to have your child(ren) play in our Upward Program. Hocutt has been doing this program for several years and I was the Cheerleading Director the first year and loved it! We usually average about 250 players/cheerleaders and the good thing is that all players play during the game! Our evaluation is also done the same way as Garner First Church. This is for players only -- not cheerleaders. Thanks for asking about Upward!
My form says that Cheerleaders and basketball players must attend one evaluation for basketball and/or must attend one orientation for Cheerleading?? So they do have to go for cheerleading just not evaluation right on that Saturday? Sorry for the confusion! LOL
The cheerleaders go in for sizing of the uniforms. No evaluations for Cheerleaders. As a side note: the TRUTH Student Ministry from our church will be running a concession stand again this year (hot dogs, chips, etc.) and the proceeds go to help our students with camp funds, etc. Stop by and have a "dog" with us!
Thanks for all the info! My daughter is excited about cheering on her cousin!!! We are also excited for the team spirit, fun and fellowship!
