Here's something you can do for our troops who are far from home this holiday season - go online and make a secure donation to the USO for phone cards, so they can call their loved ones.

If you prefer to make your contribution by phone or mail, that site gives you instructions for that, too. Just imagine how much it means to the troops and their loved ones to be able to hear each other's voice at this time. It's a meaningful way to say thank you.

    KDs..
those of us who served can easily recall the heartache of being separated from family, even more bittersweet over holidays. Thanks for sending this link. C6 and I made a donation to them tonight. And, when I hit the 53 mill, they'll get a substantial donation.

Remember using the "Mars" system? You could sign up to call home over the radio... they would call you at some awful unknown time to tell you they were placing your call. Then you and your family member talked over the radio and had to say "over" everytime you wanted the operator to switch the mike. My mom could never get it and would have such a hard time we never got to talk cause she kept saying over.

Yes, I remember that! My husband got to call me on that from Viet Nam, and I kept forgetting to say "over." It was frustrating, but at least I got to hear his voice. Guess that's why I always contribute to the USO for phone cards.
