Curious as to how the economy is affecting vacation plans this year. Are you taking a vacation?

Took a vacation back in May, and went to Key West for a week. Wish I could have afforded to turn it into a a staycation........there.

we are making a desperate effort to be happy with staying at home, this effort is not always successful especially when I'm seeing pictures on TV for example of places that I'd like to go and see.
We never used to take go on vacation and were ok with it but then we started going once a year for a week about 4 years ago and now off course we know what we are missing ;)
Don't even want to think about the fact that my sister in Germany gets 7 weeks of paid vacation per year:neutral:

We normally take 3 or 4 weeks out of the year where we go away to the beach. Went to Saint Simons Island, GA just a few weeks ago.

For the rest of our time this year, we will spend some of it with family, stay at home, and one more week trip to the beach. We are saving up for a new house, so that why we won't spend the entire time at the beach this year.

Usually spend a week at our place in the mountains in the spring, which we cut short so I could take care of some work issues, and a week at our place at Myrtle Beach. The beach trip has been confirmed as non-shortenable by the wife as she likes the beach. We have cut back our weekend trips to the beach partly due to gas prices and partly due to being busier the last couple of years.

We went to Myrtle Beach for the week. Glad we went when we did - at that time we had no worries and it was a great 'family' vacation for a change. 8)
Had planned to do more traveling this yr with all the great deals out there - but those plans have been put on hold. :?

Been spending more time at White Lake. Heading to Lambeau for a Packers home game. Other than that trip, not spending any money outside NC.

Nope, not going anywhere. Hubby is working temporary right now and gets no vacation time so it would be no fun to go without him. Tried to go to the beach for a partial week for my b-day and then have him meet us on the weekend but plans fell through. Good news is he will permanant soon~bad news is no time for vacation till April or so next year.

We used the stimulus money we got last year to take the kids to Disney this past October. Due to money (or lack thereof), we will not be taking any vacations this year. I did fly up to Philly this past weekend, but it was to help my sister pack for a move to CA and say goodbye, as we will now only see her when she comes back east for Christmas, since we can't afford to fly the family out to CA anytime in the foreseeable future.

We actually went so far as to cancel next year's vacation. We had decided last year to go on a big family vacation to Germany and Austria in the summer of 2010. Due to the economy/lack of money/no salary increases/etc, we have decided to cancel the vacation. So I don't believe that we'll go anywhere next year either. Typically when times get tough, vacations (and most other entertainment) are the first thing cut out of our budget.

We drove to South Dakota for 10 days in June. Visiting family there. No more vacations this year.

all these people not taking vacations is helping to hurt the economy. You have to put cash in to stimulate the cash flow. Trust me I did my fair share during my Key West trip. Supported the airlines by flying into West Palm. Supported a local establishment there by having dinner and a few beers. Supported a couple of local businesses on the drive down from West Palm to Key West by stopping for gas and lunch. Spent 7 days supporting the local adult beveage establishments all along Duval street, not to mention the local market right around the corner from the rental house. Supported a couple of local businesses, by taking a 26 mile jet ski tour around the island, playing golf 2 days, participatingin a bar crawl scavenger hunt one evening, and a sunset cruise one evening. Then supported local businesses during my drive back from Key West to Clayton in the form of buying gas, and food.

Getting stingy with the money only makes things worse.

Craig - if they don't have the money, they can't spend it!

We flew all 5 of us to NY to see family for 4 days...but that's not much of a vacation, believe me!! I just made our arrangements for hubby and I to get away for the weekend to NYC next month, can't wait!! I went there twice in HS, but just for the day each time, and supervised. Went again with my kids and extended family, again just for the day and wasn't easy with strolelrs, etc. So this time it's just going to be us, and we can do and see what we want at our own pace!!! :hurray:

I agree 100%, we almost did not go on vacation, as wife just wanted to keep the funds in savings. You only live once, and we decided to go on vacation, and if something happens with our work, we will deal with it then. When we have been going to the beach the last few years, we just rent a house now at the beach, it costs a lot less than staying in a nice hotel.

Also I was wondering how many weeks to most people get for vacation? I get 5, plus allowed to carry a week over each year, which I almost always do. We used to be able to sell a week back, but not anymore.

Last time I checked it cost money to go on vacation. We would be more than happy to stimulate the economy if we had the money to spend on it in the first place! :jester:

They get between 7-8 weeks of paid vacation in Germany and you do not have to be working with the company for at least a year before you are eligible for a vacation.
