Starting October 1, 2008, North Carolina vehicle safety and emissions inspections will go electronic.

This means that windshield inspection stickers will no longer be issued at your next inspection on or after October 1. After that date, the vehicle’s inspection will become due the same month as the vehicle’s registration renewal as shown on your license tag sticker.

Beginning October 1, vehicles will be required to pass a vehicle inspection prior to registration renewal by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.

I saw that on the carolina weekly website last week. They mentioned that the plate registration sticker now serves double duty. You won't get your renewal sticker if you haven't passed inspection.

Sounds like a good idea. My is halfway hanging off the windshield everyday anyway. Sorry glue.

I'll be running around with expired tags for sure. It's not intentional, be we ALWAYS manage to forget one of the vehicles. I'm going to have to set up some sort of reminder somewhere. :?

According to what I read, if your inspection is due before October, you wil have to get one more windshield sticker. If its after October, you won't have to be inspected until your plates are ready to expire. Technically, some people will go a year and half or longer without an inspection if I'm understanding it correctly. Its just a factor in the transition to this new system.

I just got my registration in August, and my inspection is up in October. So when I go get it done, will they tell me to wait another whole year almost? I wonder...It's a brand new car, so nothing wrong with it, just seems odd, some people that might not be a good idea!

I just had mine expected in May and my tags are up in Feb, so I will have to get mine done early.

    Let me understand this right..
My tags are to be renewed in Oct...my inspection isn't till Feb..so that means I don't have to do my inspection till oct of 2009 right?

Given the information you provide above, according to the Calculator from the website Kent posted, you won't need to get inspected until February 2010.

I don't know, check out that calculator in Clif's post above. I just renewed my registration in July, and my normal inspection date is January, but it says my next inspection will be due in July 2010.

ETA: From reading the article, I would have assumed it would be due in July, 2009; I wonder if the calculator is off? It does say that you will not have to be inspected less than 12 months after your last inspection.

From an article in today's N&O:

After the changes are phased in over the next two years, every car will have a single deadline date each year for inspection and registration -- with inspection coming first.

Some cars will go as long as 23 months between their last inspection on the old system and their first inspection under the new, synchronized schedule.

Take, for example, a car now due for inspection in November and registration in March. After passing inspection in November 2008 and getting a new registration in March 2009, the car's next inspection and registration deadline will be March 2010.
