John Van Pelt is one of the funniest and coolest DJ's I've ever heard. Veteran Raleigh Radio Jock Revives Radio Days Online With QROCKRADIO.COM MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (May 19, 2009) - If you were here in the 80's, the name John Van Pelt might ring a bell. From '81 to '87 he spent his days livening up the morning and afternoon commute on G105 and 94.7 with crazy characters he created like Tyrea Moore and he introduced us to the music of the times. What you may not know is that Van Pelt's career launched at Myrtle Beach's WKZQ where he and their band of DJ's brought that station to the top of the ratings in never before seen fashion. Well, Van Pelt has been back in Raleigh for a while now and is partnering with his WKZQ buddies to introduce the online world to the music that brought them to the top. John "the Pilot" Van Pelt, Bob Scarborough, Mixin' Dixon, The Freakin' Deacon, Banana Jack Murphy, Bob Chase and Bill Hennecy were the celebrated jocks of Myrtle Beach's WKZQ . This Thursday, live from Broadway at the Beach, they'll be launching their online station QROCKRADIO.COM. QROCKRADIO.COM will hold true to the original and eclectic "All over the road" format that played not only the hits of 1968 to 1988, but the favorites that made lasting impressions and hadn't been heard since. John Van Pelt explains, "Many stations say they play everything, but they really don't. We do. You'll find white, black, soft, hard, happy, heartstring, and hyper. It's everything from Zeppelin to Kool and the Gang to local favorites like Mother's Finest and Nantucket. You'll never be bored, because we don't repeat songs over and over. We have more than most to work with. And it'll be nice to reconnect with Raleigh area radio audiences." After the end of their WKZQ era, these seven had gone their separate ways. Currently, John Van Pelt is a partner in Props Marketing, a Raleigh-based marketing & design firm. Bob Scarborough is a partner at Waccamaw Media. Jack Murphy is running WLSC radio in Loris, South Carolina. Bill Hennecy manages the Myrtle Beach Speedway, Mixin' Dixon is Myrtle Beach's premier party DJ and Deacon Dawson is frequently seen acting on the big screen and TV, most recently in HBO's "Southbound and Down".
