Who has read it? I want to start reading it on my vacation coming up, but I don't want to lug the thing to California if it's not worth it. I've heard mixed reviews.

It has been many years since I read it, but I remember it as well deserving of the place it has among classic literature. Maybe you could read the first chapter before you decide whether to take it with you or not? It is a really big book, and it will be a nuisance to have to carry it if it turns out not to be to your liking.

I just wondered if it's one of those where you have to give it time to pick up. I'm trying to finish Les Miserables (I'm on a French historical fiction kick), but I may just try to find something else because reading that baby on a plane would probably break my tray table!

FYI... Research which English translation is best for you; unless you understand French and Russian quotes easily.

Personally for me, Maude was the easiest to understand version/translation... but what do I know... I read hunting and fishing magazines.

I'm also trying to read up on this period of time with Napoleon so I have a better grasp of what went down. And the Cabelas catalogue is almost as long as War and Peace!

I get all warm and dizzy when I see that thang in the mail... and I always cry at the end.
