Shelter Opening - First Baptist Church Ministry Center
    February 24, 2016

Smithfield, NC – Johnston County officials have elected to open a shelter today from noon - 8:00pm, unless weather conditions warrant otherwise, due to the impending threat of severe weather in the county. The shelter will be located at the First Baptist Church Ministry Center, 125 South Fourth Street, Smithfield.

Residents who anticipate sheltering at this location should bring their personal items such as medication; infant supplies such as formula, bottles, disposable diapers and pacifiers; comfort items and important personal documents. Items that will not be allowed at the shelters include pets, alcoholic beverages and weapons of any type.

Space permitting, Johnston County Animal Services will offer housing at the Animal Services Facility located at 115 Shelter Way, Smithfield for owners who will be sheltering at the Ministry Center. Documentation of current rabies vaccinations will be required. For pets without a current rabies vaccination, a vaccine may be purchased at the facility for a $5.00 fee.

The shelter will be staffed by representatives from the Johnston County Departments of Social Services, Public Health, Emergency Services and Sheriff’s Office. Johnston County does not have tornado rated structures within the county; however, this shelter is being provided as a precautionary measure for those who feel unsafe in their dwelling.
