A parrot that alerted his owner about a baby who was choking was recognized as a hero by the Red Cross. Willie the parrot was given the Animal Lifesaver Award during the "Breakfast of Champions" event attended by Gov. Bill Ritter and Mayor John Hickenlooper. Willie received the award Friday for his actions in November, when he and owner Megan Howard were baby-sitting a toddler.

Willie repeatedly yelled "Mama, baby" when Howard went to the bathroom and the toddler started to choke on her breakfast.

Howard saved the baby by performing the Heimlich maneuver but she said Willie "is the real hero."

What a great and funny story. Glad the young one turned out okay. I wonder how the parrot knew exactly what to say.

    Thanks for sharing,

The main question is how Obama got into the house and caused the child to become choked.... :jester:

I'm not sure what kind of parrot it is, but there has been studies, that parrots do more then just copy what we say.
Mine that talk surprise me all the time.
I have one that tells me "no night night" when I cover him up at night.
That same one chases my daughter on the floor, to get her feet and is laughing the whole time, and tells her to come here.
(he is the evil bird DD says, but he is my baby lol)

Aww, that makes me want a bird! I don't think my cat would like that but I would love to have one. They are so smart, it's amazing.

My cats don't bother my birds, never have. They were raised with them. Now that doesn't mean I would have the birds out of their cages with the bird in the same room.
Birds are loud, expensive and messy. They aren't for everyone. I wouldn't trade mine for nothing. oh and no matter how much you think they may love you, they still bite lol. Got my face bit last week for the first time in 5 years by my blue crown conure Paulie. I guess he didn't want no more kisses lol.

When I was 6 or 7 I wanted my cousin's parakeet and my grandma's cat to be friends. So I took the bird out of it's cage to introduce them. The Cat ate the bird. .... at the time I truly believed they would be friends.

I also used to make the cat wear my doll's dresses. He was preeetty.

Man, nsane, that had to scar you for life, LOL.

We had a parakeet and a puppy at the same time, parakeet was first. Parakeet was hopping around the room, puppy sees parakeet and heads in it's direction, never touched the bird. The bird fell over.............dead as a doornail. I guess it had a heart attack. :? My first and last bird.

BTW, nsane, I saw you last night and hollared at ya, but you didn't hear me. I didn't want to scare you so I didn't follow you through the parking lot at the civitan, LOL.

My aunt sucked a parakeet up in the vacuum cleaner one time when she was vacuuming out the cage. Guess she thought vacuuming would be quicker. :ack:

Noooo ... dh is working. In fact he is scheduled to work for every event they planned. DH thinks who ever decides the dates must be working opposite him on weekends. He works two then is off two. I figure he gets a 50/50 shot at having the opportunity to actually do the 'father and son' thing. But so far, if it's just luck, it hasn't been on his side. :?

    whaaaaa... lol

Sorry for the thread hijack :)

I thought I'd do the Mud Cat camp out. at least go for the day. Then John told one of the parents it was a one parent/one child deal. Said he might make accommodations and then something about they wouldn't be allowed to sleep in the same tent...? I think He gets a little excited... I know we'll make the fishing derby.

We had about 5 different birds when we had our first Beagle (hint never give a dog as a wedding gift to your loved one). We had one Cockatiel that was pretty smart and brave and got out of his cage. The bird flew across the room hit the wall and than the floor. The Beagle had him in his mouth in about 5 seconds.

Pried the dogs mouth open and not a mark on the bird, I figure as a bird dog it was genetics that kept him from crushing the bird.

The bird never tried to escape again!
